the rest of 2013

vnc|ire | irish gothic

2013 hasn’t exactly been a dull year, though judging by this journal, you’d be hard pressed to guess that. but as it were, free time seems to actually be a bit hard to come by these days. and when there is free time, i actually forget i even have a blog to post to. maybe i should repin my blog to chrome again. regardless, here’s some fun and noteworthy entries to add to this journal.

VENICE/DUBLIN/BALLYFIN
our friends iris and brendan were getting married in ireland this year, so q and i made some plans around the trip in july. q actually flew out first to travel about europe, and we then met up in venice to see the biennale. i hadn’t actually been to venice since my first time back in college in 1999. some 14 years ago…holy crap. they were still using the lire the last time i visited. now on the euro, things weren’t as cheap as i seem to remember.

our first day there we took a trip out to the island of burano. we strolled the streets and canals lined with pastel-colored buildings, and then had dinner next to a vineyard at venissa. the other days were filled with various venice roamings, and then the biennale itself the day we were to fly out to ireland. we were then in dublin for 3 days, took a trip to the giant’s causeway, hit the bushmills distillery, saw old friends, and then headed to the actual wedding venue for the final leg of the trip. the wedding venue was at the manor estate, ballyfin, which to say was bloody fancy would be an understatement. we were living at downton abbey, wayne manor, the xavier school, or whatever analogy you’d like to make to signify the level of fancy it was exuding…which was to say, considerable.

HONG KONG AND THENSOME
which leads us to the most recent “noteworthy” entry. my girlfriend q takes trips to hong kong most summers to see her friends and family. our ireland trip drained my accounts a bit, so i declined to accompany her this year. or so i told her anyway. in reality, i decided to do a bit of covert planning. while she was planning her trip, i was actually getting in touch with her friends behind her back, for a number of reasons. i contacted two of her closest friends in hong kong to get in touch with her family for me, her friend in london for possible ring sizes, another friend in hong kong that she was taking a side trip with, and numerous other friends for various advice and whatnot. yea, it’s what it sounds like. i did most of my research and sleuthing while at work, away from her prying eyes. this included information on diamonds, engagement rings, the various classifications of diamonds (dear god, every guy should be warned, and then schooled about diamonds sometime in their lifetime), as well other various diamond-related subject matter. suffice to say i became somewhat knowledgeable about diamonds in a relatively short amount of time.

after some prodding to get q to finally book her tickets to hk, i booked my flight and hotel literally the day after in secret, and then i asked her friend she was taking a side trip with to make sure that the trip (to thailand as it were) was to occur hopefully the weekend i arrive in hong kong. after q flew off to hong kong, and as my trip soon came up, i had already 1. made plans for dim sum with her parents the day after i arrive, 2. had high tea plans with her friends for “consultation” the day after that, and 3. procured a ring.

some notes i thought i’d mention when trying to keep anything a secret. one, web browsers note everything you search for, and will “tailor” ads accordingly. therefore if you’d like for engagement ring ads to NOT show up in those ads, might i suggest browsing in private windows and/or clearing your cache daily. also, best not to keep facebook nor gmail logged on your home computer where they could be easily seen by said girlfriend. yea, that was funny. thank god for logmein and my overly paranoid state. and lastly, chatting with said girlfriend while keeping up the appearance of being in the states while you’re actually in asia and in the same time zone as her is as easy as turning off all location settings on your tablet and phone.

i land in hong kong literally the same day q flies out to thailand. i thought there’d be one of those moments in the airport where i’d have to sneak around with a hat and shades, but thankfully my flight flew in 6 hours after hers left. the dim sum the next morning with her parents went fairly well, and they were of course ecstatic, as well as receptive to our sneaky plans to surprise her. the surprise plans were further refined with her friends the next day until everything was finalized. her friend v suggested a restaurant (zhe jiang heen as it were…i thought i’d note that for posterity), went ahead and made reservations, and then sent the information to everyone involved. so the next day i wandered about hong kong a bit while i could until i had to retreat back to my hotel (to avoid any possibility of running into her when she got back in the afternoon). come dinnertime, i meet up with her two friends again and we make our way to the restaurant in wan chai, messaging her family the entire way there. they had a room booked (so empty seats wouldn’t be suspicious) and q was sitting with her back facing the entry. so moment of truth. as her family collectively raised their camera phones (at her confused face), i strolled into the room and laid a bouquet of roses next to her, greeted her, gave a highly abbreviated speech to her dumbfounded face, and popped out the ring. for the record, she did say yes (after a number of minutes trying to process the situation).

as for the rest of the trip, we spent it eating and drinking with friends. light breakfast and/or dim sum, afternoon tea, dinner, and then drinks at night…rinse, repeat. oh and no photos, because we were a bit preoccupied.

mid-summer recap

midsummer already…yikes. but yes…midsummer. hmm, things to recollect so far. fourth of july weekend found a number of us in seattle for our friend miltons wedding. it was my second time in seattle…the first time was for a wedding too. hmm, what is it about seattle and getting married? anyhoo, that was fun. for our little table of ex-cornellians (the wedding was predominantly of the brides side) it was a nice bit of reunion, since i hadn’t really seen a number of them in years. the days leading up to the wedding were also packed with nonstop eating, and more eating, and then regretting eating as much as we did. coming back to nyc afterwards, i sort of wish there was somewhere in nyc that sold the little cups of fresh crab/lobster/etc like they did at pike place. god that was yum…and not terribly expensive.

other things strewn about the summer but had yet been ‘journaled’ include the big apple bbq festival (i ate a regrettable amount of bbq), gina back in town briefly and an accompanying dinner at jewel bako, hiking with sally in the palisades interstate park (ouch), an iphone upgrade (my stupid 3g couldn’t even hold a charge for more than a day), the last harry potter movie ever (sniff), and some tacos with ivor at tacombi just this past sunday. those were some good tacos. a number of other eating excursions were strewn about as well…menchanko tei with sally, minca with kj, pepe giallo with carol and margie, moustache with liz and betty, and kasadela with jess. hmm, i think (hope) that’s it. right then…

homecomings and weddings

i’m home! and when i say “home“, i really mean “home“…as in “mi casa“. it’s been nearly a full year since i first started looking for an apartment to buy…but now i’ve finally closed, moved in, started piling shit into my place…etc. and its been pretty good so far. the apartment is nearly fully furnished. there are only a few pieces left to either build or put up, but hopefully by the end of this week i can say that my apartment is 99% done (with only random household doodads left to buy). k, now i have to backtrack (per usual) since it’s been a while.

FURNITURE SHOPPING
the saturday before i moved in, i headed out in the shitty weather to furniture shop around manhattan with ky. i had an entire list of shops to check out…for some reason i thought i’d actually hit all the stores. ha! we spent most of our time browsing cb and cb2, who are admittedly straight up my alley. cb2 more than cb…but i dig both their stuff. i ended up ordering a couch set from cb, along with a number of other pieces of furniture from cb2. by this time it was already well into the evening…bugger. we ran thru the rain to have dinner at blue ribbon sushi in soho, followed by drinkies at little branch. then i had to dart back to port authority to catch the bus back to joisey (i won’t miss those)

MOVE-IN
i moved in the following saturday…and then pretty much spending every day after that picking up extra household necessities and assembling the furniture i’d ordered (with a ton of help from g+r). they were pretty much over every night helping me assemble furniture and setting up my apartment, so mucho thumbs up to them…you two rock. ikea in red hook too on sunday to pick up some book shelves (and other random shit i happened to come across). i met up with ky again afterwards for dinner at cube 63 in…whatever brooklyn neighborhood we were in. lets be honest…i know shit about brooklyn.

FIOS
the verizon people swung by wednesday to set up my fios cable and internet….fuck yea! wednesday nite was also g’s big berfday bash at kanvas! except kanvas is gone! so we relocated to la bottega instead…woots.

FUGIO DIEM
thursday was steph and jj’s premier party for their short film fugio diem at the knitting factory. very cool…there were even boobies. boobies!

MARISOL’S WEDDING
i continued picking up more things for my apartment all week long…eventually leading up to saturday…m’s wedding. omg! i met up with sean and anna saturday morning at grand central to catch the metro north. m and chris were having their wedding at a water-side park in connecticut, so we took the train out to new haven, then caught a taxi to the wedding site. the ceremony was held out on the beach (should’ve brought sandals…doh) and the reception was held in a carousel house next to the beach, replete with a working carousel. very cool. it was a nice and not-too-formal wedding…word. grats you two. considering my currently-broke nature, i took a ton of photos for them in lieu of an actual wedding present. only a few hundred photos left to photoshop…whew.

SUNDAY REMAINDERS
…and ideally i wouldve ended the post there. but hey…the fun continues. sean and anna came over for brunch sunday morning after they got out of church (they were already uptown). i made them home fries and my specialty omelettes, feta and chorizos with cilantro, basil, pepper, and other random spices. the home fries came out especially good…yay! they headed home to rest after brunch, while i headed down to soho to pick up extra things. i actually ran into ky and her friend outside of cb…which was a nice coincidence. we talked for a while before they headed back to brooklyn and i went into cb to find some nice coasters. i decided to continue south towards muji, and while waiting for the lights to change at prince st, i thought i spotted another friend of mine and called out to him. holy fuck its brad! brad not only went to cornell with me (one of only a few non-architect friends of mine), but is actually from my hometown also. he wouldve even been a frat brother if i hadnt come to my senses and wondered to myself “wtf…did i just rush a frat?!?” i hadnt actually seen brad since he graduated from cornell and headed off to tulane for med school. we had just gotten back in touch thru facebook about a month ago, but shit…this was just freaky coincidence. we grabbed coffee at cafe angelique and caught up on about 8 years worth of stuff, which was pretty nice.

i headed off to continue shopping after coffee and met up with di later for sunday night ramen. shoyu char-siu ramen at setagaya…yum yum. we grabbed a round of drinks at angels share to round out the night, since i hadnt actually seen di in a while and had a ton of stories to tell. woot.

k, now im shit tired. ive gone thru only about 10 photos so far from saturday. *sigh* so many…
