puella magi madoka magica

i’ll get around to a proper anime post for this season. but want to hear something odd? one of the best, if not the best this season is a mahou shoujo (magical girl) anime…puella magi madoka magica. yea…don’t laugh, it’s true. albeit it’s not a traditional mahou shoujo…but sort of a post-modern take on mahou shoujo, where everyone is seriously fucked up. the main protagonist hasn’t even been made a magical girl by the eighth episode (she’s the “madoka” of the title). instead, she’s frantically trying to save her friend, who did, and is now really a walking zombie because in order to become a magical girl, she had her soul torn out of her. and the cute little cat/rabbit familiar who grants wishes…he’s probably evil.

i started watching puella because it was animated by shaft (who did bakemonogatari) and honestly…wondered aloud why they were even doing a mahou shoujo. but i can see why now…the series is all kinds of disturbing. i wonder if sailor moon ever had a similar existential crisis…

anime 2010, summer/fall

damn, i already flushed out the ‘these suck massive’ animes from my servers, so i don’t actually have a good recollection of what i watched last season.  maybe i’ll peruse my last post to get an idea what i left off at…

bonus video!  it’s the OP track by chatmonchy for kuragehime…a quirky anime i’ve taken a shine to…

first, the season i left off with…

angel beats
| definitely turned out alot better than i originally gave it credit for.  poignant ending…and heh, my original comparison to haibane renmei was more on point than i thought.

arakawa under the bridge | …i didn’t stick with it…

b gata h kei | speaking of retardation…yea, this was retarded.  if one were to solely base their assumption of japanese culture thru the plethora of anime, they’d probably just assume japanese guys lacked ballsacks.  disposable anime…

durarara!! | …finished up last season, and i was sad =(

heroman | it was so dumb i stopped after the fifth or so episode.  sorry stan lee, stick with western comics…

k-on s2 | there was still no discernible plot, but they graduated!  and they’re definitely the undisputed kings of moe

mayoi neko overrun! | was actually fun to watch, in a disposable kind of way.  at this point i can’t remember a single episode…but *shrug* i didn’t hate it…

working | was also disposable, but entertaining.  and the lead protagonist wasn’t a pussy.  bonus points to him!  ending was bleh tho.

SUMMER SEASON

amagami ss | same protagonist, different girls in alternate worlds/circumstances…over and over and over again.  it’s like groundhogs day except with vapid teenagers.  i watched the first arc, realized how stupid everybody was, and wandered off…

asobi ni iku yo | really fucking retarded.  alien catgirls too stupid to be of any entertainment value, excessive tits and ass, and a general disdain for rational plots.  it was so embarrassing to watch i stopped after the third episode…

high school of the dead | even with the excessive tits and ass (a plethora…a cornucopia even), this was actually a pretty damn good series.  my eyes were glued to every episode.  zombie armageddon, japanese high school style…

ichiban ushiro no dai maō | the series started off interestingly enough with a cool premise and agreeable characters (like a reverse anime harry potter), but the story just fell apart by the end.  like seriously…nothing made sense.  why the fuck is that kid wearing a power rangers outfit?  wait what, why’s the main dude flying around on a dragon?  what the fuck is everybody doing?  dear plot, fuck you…

kaicho maid-sama | it was decent enough, til i realized every single episode had the same damn plot.  hey whats that over there?  *wanders away…*

mitsudomoe | like a mean-spirited azumanga…sort of.  it took me a while to get used to its distinct style (big and round…still not a fan), but afterwards it was pretty funny…tho the gags got old by the end (set up scenario, misheard and/or misunderstood conversations, cue humor).

occult academy | i started watching this because it was a-1 studios, but then was let down by its quality (maybe a-1’s b-team, b-1?) tho the series did eventually get interesting, even if it took a while.

okami-san | i never did get the whole allusion to red riding hood et al…but it was ok.

seitokai yakuindo | would you believe this was actually pretty funny?  everybody you’d expect to be wholesome is actually a perverted deviant, and they have a habit of saying out loud things you would normally keep in your head.  that itself makes it worthwhile.  and even with all the smut (vocally anyway), the anime was surprisingly pretty restrained (no gratuitous tits or panties, even as they showed pixelated dildos vibrating around a table in its intro).  it spoke to my perverse sense of humor…what can i say?

shukufuku no campanella | yawn…wandered off.  cutesy fantasy with no coherent plot…boooooring.

FALL SEASON ongoing…woot.

bakuman | from the creator of death note?  whatever.  while the premise was pretty educating (two kids want to break into the manga industry)…and does a fairly good job depicting whats required, the lead kid is a retard.  seriously, melodramatic and very likely the target of massive wedgies.  and while the series wants to shine a light on the manga industry, i’m pretty sure it’ll just end up turning off countless people interested in the industry.  seriously…they make it sound like self-flagellation.  ps: i’ve already stopped watching…

fortune arterial | vampires again?  fuck you.  i must’ve downloaded this accidentally…it’s ok, i’ve remedied this already by deleting all the files.

hyakka ryōran samurai girls | did i mention there are tits in anime?  hey look, more tits!  and they’re samurais and ninjas too…word.  not bad so far in all honesty, and it’s got a very cool paint brush style.  the animation’s a bit stiff at times however…

kuragehime | the aforementioned quirky anime, about a nerdy girl who lives with other nerdy girls and becomes friends with a fashionista girl, who’s actually a cross-dressing dude. yea…what the shit?  but still fun to watch, and a cool change of pace from testicle-challenged guys and girls who can’t keep their clothes on…

ore no imōto ga konna ni kawaii wake ga nai | nobody actually calls it this.  i think people just refer to it as “oreimo”, but i prefer “tim”.  pretty good so far…the animations top tier, and the story’s well written too (popular girl hides otaku hobby from everybody, uses brother as scapegoat)…etc etc.

otome yokai zakuro | this probably isn’t even a bad anime…but it didn’t keep me entertained. next…

panty & stocking | ultra-gross and perverted anime, but it’s ok because it’s in the same cutesy animation style as powerpuff girls lulz!  if i wanted to watch this style, i would flick over to cartoon network.  but i don’t, so i don’t.  and the hyper gross plots (shit, farts, boogers, etc) got annoying.

shinryaku! ika musume | moe-fied squid girl.  stupid premise, but still more funny than it should be.

sora no otoshimono: forte | second season!  yea i didn’t expect this either…did the first series do that well?  whatever…it’s still got the same perverse humor, and in a total shock, there’s actually plot progression.  ps: tits.

soredemo machi wa mawatteiru | another anime i’d classify as ‘quirky’…and about as un-typically anime as i’ve seen.  weird girl and her friend work in a rundown maid cafe with an 80 year old head maid/owner and almost no customers.  hilarity ensues (for reals!)  the OP and ED both rock too…

star driver: kagayaki no takuto | i stopped watching after he activated his galactic pretty boy powers. what. the. fuck.

to aru majustu no index | season 2 is on…woot!  tho i’m not going to lie…the first few episodes have a really weird pace.  i’m hoping it gets better…

the world god only knows | at first i thought it was a stupid premise…but i gotta say i’m getting to like it.  i think it helps that the voice actor for the main dude was the same guy who did jin in kannagi.  in other news, his school uniform looks like austin powers’ crushed velvet suit.  that has to count for something…

yozakura quartet | yea it’s just an ova, but have i mentioned how much i liked it?  the story and characters are definitely cool too, and i’d imagine the original series would’ve been made so much better if the ova’s studio (tatsunoko) had handled it instead of nomad.

anime

yozakura quartet

in lieu of my usual seasonal anime post, i think i’ll just post about this specific anime for now.  maybe i’ll get to a full-on anime post down the road.  it’s been a few seasons already since the last one, no?  feh…whatever.

a new anime cropped up this season, yozakura quartet.  or so i thought.  apparently this is the second iteration of the series…the first debuting in 2008.  i don’t really remember how much anime’ing i did back in 2008, so i’m not surprised i missed it. i did the research however after watching the first episode of the new season…the series creator was the illustrator for another favorite of mine, durarara!!.  the similarities can definitely be seen in the character designs.  the reason i did the info digging was because, holy shit, it is seriously one of the best looking animes i’ve seen in a long while.  i of course immediately went looking for the original release, and have so far been severely let down by the animation quality.  no criticism of the series itself, but the old series and this new one couldn’t have possibly been animated by the same studio.

*interlude*

erm, so on closer inspection, the new series is an OVA and is actually animated by a different studio, tatsunoko.  this could possibly explain its higher quality (as an OVA)…or tatsunoko really is worlds better than the old studio, nomad.  yea i don’t know or care…it’s still f’ing gorgeous to watch.

anime

anime, spring 2010

i quite like posting these anime entries.  there’s always this rumbling amongst the anime community about how the quality of anime out there has taken a nose-dive.  but you know what…i…sorta agree.  heh, no really, there’s still too much tits and panties and general retardation out there.  but alongside that pile of shit are animes that still rock hard, and definitely deserve attention.  as long as they get the recognition and the crotch-shot animes get relegated to bargain-bins, then it’s all good…

first…a note.  i usually follow specific fansub groups each season.  and by and large, they’re the ones that really determine what i watch.  if they chose an anime that i liked one season, i may stay with them in the hopes that they consistently sub animes that appeal to me.  listing a few fansubs off the top of my head…the groups i follow are eclipse, horrible, bss, gg, mazui, doki, and coalguys (when they/he decides to actually fansub).  i lean towards speed-sub groups.  tho in these cases, their quality is usually pretty good already…so speed-subbing isn’t an impediment to the quality.

anyhoo, last season, i watched:

baka to test to shōkanjū | surprisingly better than originally anticipated, given that it has one of the stupidest titles.  it meanders considerably during the middle of the season (you wonder whether they forgot about their original plot), and too many gags are overused.  but still worth a watch.

dance in the vampire bund | creepy loli (but she’s a vampire and not really a 10 year old!) but another one that turned out better than expected.  the first half of the season was sluggish, but the season ended on a high point.  the animation takes some getting used to tho.  shaft’s style worked for bakemonogatari…not so much for action animes.

durarara!! | the highlight of last season, durarara oozes with style and originality.  and for split seconds here and there, you could imagine the characters really inhabiting some hidden corner of ikebukuro.  even the ‘fantasy’ characters are given a real personality.  i usually dump past season’s animes from my hard drive to make room for the new season…unless they’re worth keeping. and durarara definitely gets classified as ‘worth keeping’

edit…ha, i didn’t even realize it was ongoing.  episode 12 ended so thoroughly, it seemed like the end of the series.  bonus.

fullmetal alchemist | dear god episode 52 and still going.  not that i’m complaining…this shit is good.  i definitely liked the first anime’s “interpretation”, and having never read the manga, i always wondered why the more devoted fans of the manga decried the changes.  but now i understand.  it wasn’t that the older anime was necessarily worse than the manga, but the manga’s story was more expansive…it had more stories to tell, and had such a broader scope that the older anime seemed myopic in comparison.

ladies vs butlers | tits.  lots of tits.  otherwise meh.

omamori himari | yea i watched it, but i didn’t want to. ;p  no really…it was bleh.

so ra no wo to | the supposed “k-on goes to war” anime.  the first few episodes bored me stupid, and made me wonder what the shit cutesy moe girls were doing in the goddamn army.  i ended up wandering off…anyone else finish up the series?  maybe i should revisit this one…

the qwaser of stigmata | the infamous tit-sucking anime.  i keep reading about it.  i’ll admit i’m curious…should i download it?!?

to aru kagaku no railgun | railgun finished up this season, and it was pretty good.  they’ve always been pretty clever how they weaved their stories…small episodes earlier in the season informed later episodes.  and by the end of the season, what seemed like individual self-contained stories were in fact just components of the larger picture.

and the new season has already started.  i’ve decided to watch the following animes:

angel beats | interesting premise…so far it’s kept me fascinated.  it’s like a more violent haibane renmei…maybe.

arakawa under the bridge | quirky…but the lead guy annoys me.  i feel urges to kick him in the testicles.  but i’ll probably stay with it.

b gata h kei | retarded thus far.  but i do allot a few “dumb as shit” animes in my line-up each season.  but this categorization shares the same allotments as “just for tits” animes…and the tits get precedence.

heroman | i hadn’t even heard of this anime before, but horrible listed it and i gave it a roll.  it was actually created by stan lee (whuuuut), and he even cameos in the first episode.  its pretty interesting so far, and it’s animated by bones…and that’s never a bad thing.  if anything, it’ll be interesting to see an anime do “slice of life” with an american slant.

k-on s2 | moe!  this and the continuing fullmetal and durarara!! are probably the headliners for this season, since nothing else seems as interesting…

mayoi neko overrun! | categorized under “possibly stupid”, the first episode was better than expected.  may be relegated to forgettable by the end of the season, but it seems like a potential distraction.

working | same categorization as the above anime.

here’s to hoping it’ll be a good season…

edit | i don’t know why the shit the video is mirrored, nor why it’s so damn hard to find a non-parody of the durarara ending.  gah!

anime

anime, s4 edition

anime musings, part three.  i’ve found anime to be a nice weekly distraction now…as long as i watch the episodes in a timely matter that is.  most of the time i don’t, so they gather in my “to sort” folder until i watch them all in bulk.  still fills a nice niche however for those rainy/cold/shitty/fuck i need to get out more but just can’t be bothered days.

bakemonogatari | odd as hell, but fascinating to watch.  there’s little action, and alot of exposition…it’s more of a cerebral anime dealing with character development than anything.  highly experimental too.

darker than black | this is actually season 2.  i somehow missed season 1, so i just wiki’d it, caught up, and went straight into dtb2.  a little confusing at first, but the stories are quality.  and alot of people die.  seriously…don’t get attached to any character that happens to wander onto the screen. they’re likely to get strangled, shot, electrocuted, or eaten alive by cockroaches by the end of the episode.

fullmetal alchemist | oh so much better than the first fma…which itself deviated greatly from the original manga source.  this ones more true to the manga source, and it pays off.

haruhi suzumiya | great, and disappointing at the same time.  they wasted too many episodes on the insane endless eight arc, which didn’t leave much room to bring in more of the light novel stories.  blargh…at least there’s the chance of a third season.

needless | brainless action, and dragonball-esque fights that take 3 weeks to resolve.  it’s surprisingly comedy-oriented however…and there are alot of those moments that work. otherwise nothing spectacular.

queen’s blade | seriously…jk.  it’s shit.  barely televisable hentai.

the sacred blacksmith | better known as sacred boobsmith.  i gave it a chance, since the animation was top notch (manglobe…who did champloo).  but shit are the characters dumb as fuck and the stories pedantic.  it’s already been tossed off my hard drive.

to aru kagaku no railgun | the majutsu sidestory following mikoto instead of toma.  thumbs up eh.  and i didn’t point it out in the older anime roundups, but yea…majutsu’s thumbs up too.

anime

haruhi s2

the second season of haruhi is in full effect…word! they secretly snuck it into the ‘re-airing’ of the first season. the marketing team behind haruhi is admittedly a little fucked in the head, with all their retarded antics, but whatever…season 2 is on. the first episode can be found if you hunt a bit for iso’s….

and for those wondering what the fuck is up with something like haruhi, id say its a choice example of the heights an anime can achieve…original, intelligent, well-written, funny, and not full of robots and/or panty shots…yea. tho they do stuff asahina into bunny/maid/nurse outfits…
