woo, i finally attended my first movie screening! and it rocked! tien had an open spot for a private screening of hero, so he invited me along. the movie was being shown by miramax in this private screening room in midtown, which had some righteously cushy seats. even tho id already seen hero a hundred times, id never seen it on the big screen. and now that i have, i have to say…the movie was definitely rock x10 on the big screen. all the fight scenes were ridiculously better when the screens 100x bigger than your tv…especially the moon vs. flying snow fight amongst the autumn leaves. i think i shed a tear.
even though the movie was mostly kept intact (to my knowledge), there were a few noticeable discrepancies in the subtitling (tien xia, etc…), most likely done so the dialogue made a little more sense to an american audience. what i also found interesting was the toned-down communist (socialist) rhetoric. in the original, the dialogue (subtitles) focused on the idea that the needs of the many outweighed the needs of the individual. in the miramax version, this was still intact, but was slightly shifted to emphasize more of an anti-war stance. peace for the many at the cost of individuals…clever buggers. my mandarins admittedly a bit dodgy, so if this was the originally intended message, i wouldnt have picked up on it. regardless tho, holy shit does the movie still rock. the movie premieres friday, so def check it out in the theaters.
