funny how i started netflix so i wouldnt buy dvds anymore. thats what i told myself anyway. in actuality, my mind was mumbling under its breath “wouldnt buy (as many) dvds…” as i was passing thru virgin last nite, my hand seemed to involuntarily snatch the copy of lost in translation sitting innocently on the shelf. oops. i incidentally also received three new netflixes in the mail when i got back to my apartment…so i watched one of those before firing up lost to make myself feel better. the movie seemed even more relaxing this second time around, especially from the comforts of my television-flanked bed. ah…muy bien.

the making-of featurette for lost in translation was pretty coo also. portions of it were actually shot by coppola’s (soon-to-be) ex-husband spike jonze (he’s introduced with a hand reaching around the camera in one shot)…and by watching it, you see rather clearly the mirrors of charlotte and john. sophia coppola is charlotte…and spike jonze the basis for john. i wonder if spike saw the obvious parallels while he was shooting the featurette. it was also coo to watch the film being shot on location around tokyo amidst the flowing crowds of people. i had momentarily forgotten just how noisy and chaotic tokyo was…its easy watching the movie with its chill soundtrack. you apparently dont get your own muted soundtrack when you walk around tokyo…just alot of flyers.
