feelin’ | …tired
ah…second viewing of the return of the king today. this time with “premium seating.” woot! but ill get to that in a bit. fish came into the city today after work and we headed up to 71 irving for coffee and chess. we didnt get a chance for chessing christmas eve because we couldnt find any coffee place open after din. our movie showing was at 7pm, so we fig’d that we had enough time for just one game. after an aggressive opening and what i thought was the start of a strong attack on my part, fish strolls down my queens side and checkmates me. what the fuck? ok…my bad. onto game two. in the second game, i pushed up a central pawn pyramid and marched my queens side pawns up to goad his pieces to move. when fish rebuffed my pawns, i continued pushing forward anyway and my queen quickly swept in to get a two pawn advantage. fish still managed to get superior positioning afterwards, but since i had an advantage in pieces, i attacked whatever pieces he had in attacking positions. even after i pressed my b and c column pawns up to get a new queen (two queens total now), fish continued to push his attack. and he nearly got a draw too, but i eventually forced a one move advantage and checkmated his king. wheeeew! i think i wouldve cried if he got a draw after my early advantage and having two damn queens.
we headed up to the 34th st theater around 6:30, but kind of took our time b/c we had reserved premium seats…woo. what this means is that we had specifically reserved seats…the leather ones too…with a big tray next to the seat for snacks and drinks. word. i thought the movie rocked the first time around, but i think i appreciated the movie on a whole new level the second time around. the first time was a sensory overload, so the second time didnt feel so overwhelming. i could take the time to notice the details better…especially during the battle of the pelennor fields. i could also appreciate the music better this time. the music made so many scenes…wow. the ending also didnt seem quite as long as the first time. something shorter wouldve been fine for a one-time viewing…but this extended ending was for longevity. it wasnt an ending for just one movie…it was a fitting end for the entire trilogy as a whole. i have no idea what im going to do until the extended dvd comes out. there had better be enough good movies to adequately distract me from now til next december(?).
