theres an article today in the ny times about research being conducted by the national geographic society on the texas twang. i would say that its an interesting article…but i always seem to start these kinds of posts with “theres an interesting article…” so i wont. i find it fascinating how they “romanize” john greers texan accent as if it were a foreign language. the article pointed out the diverging accents of urban and rural texans…and how people from dallas, fort worth, houston, etc generally dont have as pronounced an accent as their rural cousins…which is true. marisol and alice (houston) dont have accents, and ags (dallas) only has a slight accent. i grew up in the boonies of texas…so while i dont know exactly how bad my twang was, im sure it was pretty obvious given the fact that my first friend in nj asked me whether i was from texas the first day i met him. i think i replied “how’d y’all know?” it took me a year or two to shake the accent. my sis tho…i think her accent lingered for years. you know, now that i think about it, hers never really went away.
