2046

[ audio selection | rockers hi fi – going under (k+d sessions) ]

dude, old school kruder+dorfmeister in the house…and still sounding chill after all these years. k+d’s been seeing heavy rotation in our studio (thanks to me), so i dug up the cds from my collection and ripped it to my iaudio…swish.

anyhoo, following yesterdays post about days of being wild, theres a new(?) trailer out for wong kar wais upcoming 2046. im not sure whether this is the same trailer mentioned in the comments section of a prior post (i never did get to see it), but this trailers pretty chill, showcasing the all-star line-up of tony leung, gong li, faye wong, zhang ziyi, carina lau, chen chang, and maggie cheung…along with takuya kimura and thongchai mcintyre. all-star and international…very coo. the movie is or will be out soon throughout asia and europe, and will hopefully make its way to america somehow.

parade of robots

via aicn

This scene alone took a full year to produce. The Production IG staff went to Taiwan twice to see a similar, real parade scene. The scene was selected to be displayed at the 2004 Siggraph Electronic Theater, an exposition of “the world’s most innovative, imaginative works in computer graphics and interactive techniques.

some seriously sick shit…wow. ghost in the shell 2: innocence premieres this weekend in select theaters, and is set to redefine the anime genre once again.

christopher doyle interview

and as an added bonus too, aicn has a coo interview with christopher doyle, the cinematographer of hero. aside from the fact that doyle is reportedly a drunk sketchy dude who habitually chases young asian girls, hes still a rockin’ cinematographer. most people are probably familiar with doyles work with wong kar kai…that is, every single movie wong kar wai’s ever directed had doyle as the cinematographer. he just has an incredible eye for details and nuances, which is readily evident in the sheer beauty of hero. so take a look at the interview, then go rent all of wong kar wais movies, and then go watch hero on friday. word.

ying xiong

[ audio selection | moby – go (analog mix) ]

woo, i finally attended my first movie screening! and it rocked! tien had an open spot for a private screening of hero, so he invited me along. the movie was being shown by miramax in this private screening room in midtown, which had some righteously cushy seats. even tho id already seen hero a hundred times, id never seen it on the big screen. and now that i have, i have to say…the movie was definitely rock x10 on the big screen. all the fight scenes were ridiculously better when the screens 100x bigger than your tv…especially the moon vs. flying snow fight amongst the autumn leaves. i think i shed a tear.

even though the movie was mostly kept intact (to my knowledge), there were a few noticeable discrepancies in the subtitling (tien xia, etc…), most likely done so the dialogue made a little more sense to an american audience. what i also found interesting was the toned-down communist (socialist) rhetoric. in the original, the dialogue (subtitles) focused on the idea that the needs of the many outweighed the needs of the individual. in the miramax version, this was still intact, but was slightly shifted to emphasize more of an anti-war stance. peace for the many at the cost of individuals…clever buggers. my mandarins admittedly a bit dodgy, so if this was the originally intended message, i wouldnt have picked up on it. regardless tho, holy shit does the movie still rock. the movie premieres friday, so def check it out in the theaters.

transformers and daggers

a coo news report emerged today concerning the prospects of the live-action murphy and desanto transformers movie. cinescape posted today that not only was the movie production underway, but its already found a home at both dreamworks and paramount pictures…and steven spielberg is an executive producer. wow…didnt know spielberg was a transformers fan. its reported that dreamworks will be handling the domestic release, and paramount the international release. now all they need is a script, director, and um…some actors and actresses.

SHI MIAN MAI FU/HOFD/LOVERS
and even tho the last post about the house of flying daggers was for a review skewering it, i thought id post this anyway. the new japanese trailer for lovers (aka: house of flying daggers, aka: shi mian mai fu) is up on the quicktime japan site. looks coo…check it out. ignore the weird music and takeshis hammy acting.

ADVENT CHILDREN
and finally, ign posted up new screens from the upcoming direct-to-dvd movie final fantasy vii: advent children. the new screens are ridiculously coo, with new glimpses of tifa going chun-li on a dude, vincent looking eerily like hyde from l’arc~en~ciel, and more pics of the white-haired dudes. dear square/enix, release the fucking dvd already.
if you havent viewed the trailer yet, please do so…

house of flying daggers review

the first shi mian mai fu (house of flying daggers) reviews up on aicn, and its pretty scathing. the reviewer lays out the entire plot for you, and then picks apart the various issues they had with its presentation. while the reviewer quite liked the various fight scenarios, the characterizations and plot bizzare twists left them a little wanting. so even tho house of flying daggers was lauded at the cannes film festival, the reviewer still found the movie to be rather pedestrian when compared to the other big releases of the summer like spider-man 2 and harold and kumar. that latter movie raised eyebrows and suspicions from quint…
