matrix finale

current selection | nigo – march of the general
feelin’ | matrix-y

ill first stick this bit of info into the precedings. theres a new teaser trailer up for a roland emmerich film called the day after tomorrow about a post-“apocalyptic” second ice age…a pretty scary (but real) possibility. it stars dennis quaid and jake gyllenhaal, one of my favorite actors at the moment…so take a look.

in a little over 12 hours, ill be watching the finale to a 4 year trilogy…woo! there have so far been a fair amount of bad reviews and an even amount of good (and some disturbingly excited) reviews for matrix revolutions. i think paul clinton, who i incidentally think is an absolute arse of a reviewer, stated it best when he said, “when it comes to the matrix franchise, either people love it — really, really love it. or they hate it — really, really hate it.” cant disagree with you there, ass cheeks. the reviews have been almost predictably split down a demarcated boundary. most of the tepid-to-vicious reviews have been from your average pedestrian fare (newspapers, etc…), while almost all of the positive reviews came from cinema and entertainment sources (ign, cinescape, etc…) so since i subscribe to the latter, ill probably be thoroughly entertained.

after reading a number of reviews, i started noticing a pattern. not in the uniformity of critiques of the matrix specifically, but how some of the critiques are repeated over and over again. many of the negative reviewers kept stating how everything is cliched and uninventive…unimaginative. i was thinking then…have we gotten to the point where we’ve seen everything? because apparently nothing is new to these people…they seem to have seen it all. i wonder how shitty it must be to be a movie reviewer, b/c nothing fascinates them anymore…pure entertainment is placed behind the need for critically intellectual masturbation. but whatever…matrix, woot!

return of the king featurettes

one last entry for today, since its become glaringly obvious that i love cinema way too much. or to be more precise…i love certain movies way too much. theres a new (not really) featurette on the lord of the rings site that goes into the details of minas tirith, the capital of gondor and the main city/location in the forthcoming return of the king. its a pretty coo video featurette and describes the work that went into the massive set. check out the other featurettes too…

as an aside, i just noticed that they had more pictures of the witch-king on the site…and i have to admit my slight disappointment at his decidedly un-ass-kickingly-cool design. for some reason, when i read the book i imagined his head to be a giant flame with glowing eyes and an iron crown hovering above it like a halo. <the picture in my mind> the witch king instead has some weird pokey helmet with toothpicks for a crown…pooey.

anyway, im still partial to this image from the first movie. probably one of the coolest stills ive ever seen from any movie…

indiscriminate mondays

everyday seems to be random, no? i was watching i love the 80’s strikes back on vh1 last night, and it seemed one part comforting, one part disturbing. i am at that point in life where they can make tv specials out of my childhood….eek. the next phase in this cycle of life is the recycling of the fashion trends as well. last i checked, we were in the desperately seeking susan mid 80’s. the second i start seeing skidz pants and champion sweatshirts make a comeback, ill start worrying. so i caught the ’87 and ’88 editions of ilt80sb (pronounced ‘iliter-eighties-b’) before the simpsons came on. some of the highlights included: thundercats (hoooo!), police academy, the rise and fall of steve guttenberg, beetlejuice, the jamaican bobsled team and their bobsled-sized bong, and the eternally fresh princess bride. princess bride rocketh alot…now i have to hunt down the dvd. and for some reason, it felt as if ’87 and ’88 was the breaking point between what felt 80’s and what could pass as harbingers for the 90’s. also of note is the fact that i don’t like mo rocca. he sounded like an ironic hipster prick everytime words came out of his mouth.

some coo bits of news from aicn today. the first is a new teaser trailer for the new ghost in the shell 2: innocence movie. its a short teaser…kinda feh in my opinion, but the visuals are ridiculous. theres however no visuals of motoko…only bateau, and he’s not the prettiest thing to look at.
aicn also pointed to the new matrix revolutions figures coming out from mcfarlane toys…neo, morpheus, an a.p.u., etc…woo! the figures are all from revolutions…except maybe morpheus. that one looks more like the original morpheus from the first matrix.

matrix countdown

current selection | esthero + ian pooley – balmes (a better life)
feelin’ | lunch

per tradition…well within a 6 month period anyway…its the one week (minus one day) countdown til matrix revolutions. huzzah! so i wont be going crazy on the photoshop like last time. i had how many hours of lost productivity? yea, no good. this time, unlike last time, i will be more than prepared and will almost be guaranteed the proverbial “perfect seat.” (call me fanboy and i’ll hurt and maim you viciously). last year (whups…it was only 6 months ago), regardless of the fact that me and fish were waiting in line an hour and a half before the movie time, we still got relatively feh seats. an hour and a half! this time though will be perfect. me and fonz will be waiting in line two and a half hours before the movie time (overkill? a little?). fish is coming in from jersey, so he’ll take a bit longer. he’ll also hopefully be bringing foodage for us since two and a half hours is a long time to wait. hmm…maybe korean from down the street. yum. wednesdays however just the beginning. me and fish are hanging out saturday, and we will be catching matrix revolutions again…in imax! word. by next week, i should be thoroughly blinded and deafened…or just cross-eyed.

and the fun part is that this whole arduous geek process will be repeated for the return of the king…straight up.

if you’ve kept tabs on the cin3matic world lately, you mightve heard ruminations of an aliens vs predator movie. this idea originally emerged from the movie predator 2, where the head of an alien was plopped in a trophy case. well, if you didnt know, the movies actually been green-lit and has been shooting for a while now, helmed by paul ws andersen. i had reservations about this movie since its inception for a number of reasons. one…mortal kombat sucked, ergo paul andersen sucked since he vomitted up the thing. the shite dialogue still echoes in my ears every so often….*cower* two…resident evil half-sucked. i couldnt watch the movie without having to cover my ears from the shit soundtrack that ass marilyn manson shat out. milla jovovich and her nakedness however made it thoroughly watchable. and three…well, the prognosis of the script so far hasnt been too optimistic. ill however save personal judgement for the movie til i see it. things dont bode well tho when you refer to your movie by an acronym. avp? what is that shit? look at what happened to the league (aka lxg). its just a rule of thumb, save for the terminator movies…theyre exempt. and neither stan winston (who designed the original predator) nor hr giger (aliens, natch) are on board either…so thats a shot in the left ass cheek.

anyway…a teaser trailer and a featurette with paul andersen was just made available for mass consumption. the teaser trailer features alot of heavy breathing, grunting, and nothing much else. thoroughly exciting…

a cin3matic topic ive rarely covered lately seems to be star wars. with all the coverage the matrix and lord of the rings gets these days, star wars seems to have been thrown into the backseat (along with parking tickets, gym clothes, and happy meal toys). i suppose im in the vast majority of the population who thinks lucas has a pole up his ass and is smashing the franchise into a wall…repeatedly. theres just something about his crappy dialogue and stilted direction that kind of leaves a bad taste in my mouth. like stale mcdonalds fries and that waxy layer of shiz it leaves on your tongue. awful…blech. anyway, information regarding episode iii (or trois, if you’re french) has slowly trickled out little by little over the course of the production, and its just now that more detailed accounts of the movie have emerged. amongst them are details of anakin’s ass-kicking at the hands of obi-wan, how the jedi council gets their butts kicked all over the place, and new villains that come up. amongst them is some guy named grevious (it looks just like the word grievous…lucas you clever dude, you), possibly another guy named durge, and the one im banking on to kick the most ass…asajj ventress. the latter one, ventress, was first seen as a conceptual drawing for episode ii: attack of hayden christensen’s rat tail. before count doodu took precedence as the new villain, one of the sketches conceptual artist dermot power drew was of a pale and bald female sith sporting double curved-hilt sabers. she was eventually dropped in favor of saruman, but they brought her back as a character in the clone wars animated mini-series, and (presumably) episode iii. hopefully all the speculations are true and she’ll make an appearance in the movie (currently none of the villains mentioned above are listed on imdb).

like everybody else who shat on the newest star wars movies…ill still be there opening day to watch the movie. lucas promises it will be “the darkest episode yet.” woooo…lucas, you spinster of eloquent descriptions. im sold. maybe he’ll still fuck it up…at least there’ll be light saber fights to enjoy.

unpremeditated thursdays

current selection | seatbelts – cat blues (mr. scruff remix)
feelin’ | like friday

feh…sorry about the header. i just couldnt stand to use the word “random” anymore. blah. im starting to really like the cushy buses of the m9. im not sure whether the entire fleet of m9s has cushy seats, but the last three times ive ridden the m9, ive gotten the coach-style seating arrangements. the first time i got on one of them, i was like, “uh…what bus is this?” whereby the driver gave me a snarky, “m9.” what a butt hole.

i finally got tix for matrix: revolutions last nite. wooha! now i usually do this sort of fanboy thing a month in advance of their premieres, but for some reason the theaters were being dicks about it and werent offering advance tickets on october 5th like they shouldve (they did in the past, and i complied by buying them in advance). i checked daily for a while til i got bored and trailed off. then just last week i started checking again…whereby i saw that all the times for ua union square were sold out. feh…whatever. so last nite (which was the two week marker) i noticed that the 34th st loews finally had tix where they didnt the day b4. woo. so i snatched up three 9:15 tix for me, fish, and fonz. so thats taken cared of. ill be there at 7:30.

and the first half of last nites smallville was a fucking cock tease damnit. lana skinny dipping? it couldnt be real…and of course, it wasnt. those manipulative bastards…

donnie darko re-release

current selection | bjork – human behaviour (underworld remix)
feelin’ | bundled

theres a coo article today on aicn about richard kelly, the writer/director of the under-appreciated movie donnie darko. kelly talks about, amongst other things, his influences (kafka, philip k dick, dostoevsky…), how jason schwartzman (rushmore) helped get darko off the ground, and darko’s potential re-release in march, 04. concerning the latter, kelly wanted to re-release a directors cut more akin to what was originally shown at the sundance festival back in 2001 and with possibly even more footage not found on the dvd. very coo. oh, and as an aside, they also mentioned that mcfarlane toys was working on a frank the bunny toy. creeeeepy. it should have a string in the back…and when you pull on it, frank goes, “wake up donnie…

if you havent already, check out the donnie darko website made by the vicious ass-kickers at hi-res! and if you havent seen the movie…two things. one, dont bother with the website til you’ve seen the movie b/c you wont understand it. and two, why the fuck havent you seen donnie darko yet?
