weekend party, part 1-100

current selection | rob d – clubbed to death (first mix)
feelin’ | party pooped

throwing a house party is fun. crazy tiring, but fun. fridays party was originally a house-warming party (5 months past the fact…fuck you)…but after i found out the fonz was going to be in atlantic city for the weekend, it became just a party. then when we found out that liz was going to be leaving for hong kong permanently, it became a going-away party for the liz-meister. if shes going to be leaving our country…she’ll be leaving it drunk! or something…no wait. whatever.

i ran directly home after work on friday to pick up the beer shipment from the doorman before he left for the day. i carted up 2 boxes full of beer cases to my apt (word up betty and liz!) and stuffed my fridge full of beer and beer. after prepping the apt with pretty lights, mixes01+02, and stereo future projected on the wall, i sat around and did absolutely nothing. an hour later…i did more nothing. waiting for a party to start really sucks. i suppose it wasnt all bad. the townhouse across the street from my building was having some kind of party also…so i watched as 20 or so taxis pulled up consecutively and people poured into the townhouse one after another. i have to say…i was a bit jealous. liz and her crew showed up around 11:00…and shortly afterwards waves of people just poured in. partys started i think…woo! the apt filled to capacity with hordes of people…the majority i knew, some semi-familiar faces, and some i wondered whether they didnt just wander in. hmm. the party rocked so hard it hurt. stereo future was replaced with fawlty towers briefly, at the request of aarij. and one cd was swapped for esthero halfway thru also. its odd having to actually play music from a cd…i couldnt run wires far enough from my computer to the living room stereo. pooey. people kept showing up well into the party…never knew my apt could hold so many people.

halloween weekend

its always fun when you plan for nothing and get a buttload of fun instead. b/c i didnt have a costume for halloween, my original plan was as follows: eat, watch movie. it was succinct and thoroughly well planned. at the last second tho, i decided that i did in fact really want to get wasted, and would make one last effort to find a costume. i ran to andy’s (not-so) chee-pees and found a black blazer. then i ran to rickys to look for a black mask. i didnt find one, so i got a red mask instead…and bought some black markers while i was at it. that, combined with my swishy tie, black pants, and my black bokken, makes for a rockin’ crazy 88. woo! so me and fonz met up with my friend min and her friend toshiko (sheriff and bjork) and we headed out to the middle of nowhere greenpoint to her co-workers party. it was a pretty coo house party…not crowded, but coo costumes. i mistook this one guy (who was walter from the big lebowski) for george lucas. i think he wanted to hurt me. we stayed til 11:30, then left to hit up an arch party in chelsea. thanks to the G train that eats much ass, and the L which was even worse, we didnt get to chelsea til an hour later. when we did get there, the party was already crazy rockin’. the apt was a swish duplex with speakers from the 2nd floor mezzanine blasting music down to the first floor area. very coo. when i got there, there was already one other crazy 88 and two go go yubaris. and when marisol and paulie showed up later, we got another go go and a wolverine with dinner knives for claws. we were hoping that the go go‘s would have some kind of battle royale (seemed fitting), but no such luck.

i made my way over to the greenwich st. project saturday afternoon to take some updated photos for my company. i took about 20 photos from as many unoriginal perspectives as i could, and then shot up to columbus circle to meet up with dora, sally, anna, and sean. we were planning on chilling in central park, so we made our way to memorial field (?) and laid out on the grass. dora was clipping coupons while the rest of us just laid around people watching. we also watched as the sun just completely dropped away in a matter of minutes, and by 4:30pm it was already dusk. damn the earth and its stupid sun-angle rotations. we sat around in the pitch black til park attendants chased us away in their golf-carts-of-doom (damn youz!) we then went back to anna and sally’s for a bit to chill. after sally left to go work at alice’s, the four of us made our way to k-town for some ox-tail soup luvin’ at gam mee ok. we wanted after-din coffee too, so we trekked down to 71 irving place, where i got a root beer float…yum. 71 irving was very coo…it reminded me alot of the coffee shop i used to frequent at school…and might just become my coffee shop-of-choice when me and fish are needing a coffee-and-chess place. after finishing our drinks, we headed to the west village to meet up with a large crew of people at cafe noir for drinky drinks. people came and went, and our group at one point swelled to 15 or so people…wow. after some vicious mojitos and capirinhas (no taste, all cachaca) and people heading off, five of us went to go get more drinky drinks (and a side of sushi) at swim. mmm…spicy yellowtail. and after even more drinking and munching (and the fact that swim closed), we (re)met up with liz and kevin and went to kush for some hookah. so the end of the night came down to us watching two japanese girls across from us dancing middle-eastern style in some odd trance while their boyfriends watched (one of them was video recording), us contemplating (not so) quietly about how they get their kicks (pop in vol.3 baby while we shag!), and the conversation degrading to what the definition of “bukkake” was. excellent…

bizarro world

current selection | ash – a life less ordinary
feelin’ | lazy

its apparent that when theres nothing to write about, i jus scour the internet for interesting articles, right? well whats wrong with that? im groggy today, k? so its hard for my mind to execute any kind of complex mental capacities. well, actually…not true, since i was going to point out this interesting article about parallel universes. – article – (which if u think about it isnt really that complex…) scientists postulate that given the (apparently) infinite nature of the universe, in the simplest cosmological model, your exact duplicate should exist 10~10th~28th meters from where ur currently sitting. wait…what was that? i jus got a m3ntal reading from my doppelganger in the universe one over that he has indeed jus picked his nose, whereas i merely scratched mine. dude, dont pick ur nose in public….thats not right. probabilities…probabilities.

drinky drinky

current selection | television noise
feelin’ | sobered

ah…there should be a new bday celebration every weekend. marisol organized a small drinky drink last nite for my bday celebrations (you rock!). i strolled to candela on union sq, where marisol, betty, sally, alice, terence, paulie, and 2 of paulie’s friends had jus started ordering rounds. i was running on empty since i was blading with pho after work and didnt have din, so we got calamari and a spicy tuna roll along with our first rounds. liz shows up later…and after having a second round, we migrated to drinkland for some rockin’ and ass-shaking. u kno, i dont remember ever not having fun at drinkland…woo! we start with drinks of course…at the bar marisol hands me a drink…and then alice hands me a drink. uh oh. hopefully the sushi, calamari, and that mochi i had b4 leaving my apt was enuf to hold back the bad bad drunkiness. highlights of the nite include getting jiggy with the best of the 80’s, the cute dj groupie in the dj booth, and toni basil’s mickey en espanol.

met alice, terence, and betty for lunch today at kum gang san…basically pigged out on yum korean since the only reason i even got up today (groggy) was b/c my stomach was telling me to feed it. we headed north after lunch to chill in central park. we hit sheeps meadow, the great lawn, the castle, and turtle pond…very chill. we head out of central park around 6…i had to make my way back to my apt to wait for my sis and her bf to get into nyc. knowing my sis…i fig that she’d be late. she gets in around 8:30…right. we have din at yokocho’s and order 6 yakitoris, bbq grill, and spicy tuna in a bowl. damn their spicy tuna’s good. afterwards my sis wanted to still see my apt, so we grab their car and try and find parking around my apt. 15 minutes later and still no parking spot, she drops me off and heads off. *shrug*

don’t mess with texas

big props to greg down in austin, texas! he got me one of the coolest bday presents ive ever received…he travelled down to my old town along the gulf coast in texas, took 2 rolls of film, had them developed, and then sent them to me in time for my birthday. you rock greg! we had actually discussed this off hand months ago, after i had seen that he took a road trip to hope, texas (from the sandra bullock movie hope floats) for a friend of his. so i mentioned off hand that itd be coo for him to trip down to my lil boonie town in the middle of calhoun county (pronounced cow~hooooon). i passed him info on what i could remember of the two towns i lived in (point comfort and port lavaca)…the addresses i thought were my old houses, some sites that i could remember, and left him to his own devices. and he came thru…even tho i got both my addresses wrong. whups. and even tho i got reminded jus how boonie my town was, i still got all teary-eyed from seeing the lil shack of a house that we called our first home in america.

01, 02 | the half moon reef lighthouse – symbol of port lavaca along the matagorda bay
03 | the old baptist church we used to attend in point comfort

i was doting around the internet today and decided for some odd reason to follow this link to a band that did a metal cover of the soundtrack to one of my favorite games of all time. so i thought id take today to espouse one of the greatest video games in the entire glorious history of gaming. what game eh…doom? kings quest? no u fuckhead…im referring to star control 2. earths enslaved, and you’re the captain of a big stonkin’ ship sent to kick everybodys ass and save the universe. rockin’ gameplay, rockin’ soundtrack, and one of the most epic storylines in a video game…not to mention some of the best dialogue ever written (die, slugboy!) toys for bob has been diligently working on a freeware version of star control 2 for some time now (technically called the ur-quan masters…theyre at 0.2alpha…check it out!) so go download it and get all nostalgic for the glory days of gaming. here’s to fwiffo.

global shaolin

current selection | queen – bohemian rhapsody
feelin’ | toasty

two bdays are coming up this weekend…sallys and my sis’. both are being celebrated on saturday. super. so i went hunting for my sis’ bday present, a shaolin soccer dvd. i stopped by kims video first…but they didnt have it. (i did pick up my friend tutor tho…whups!) so i started treking down towards chinatown. in chinatown i happened to run into liz, dora, anna, and alfred…all waiting around for din. co-eenkeedink. so i join them for din at pho bang after picking the dvd for my sis. it was a dinner gathering of some of the third years that jus graduated (ok, theyre not third years anymore, but in my mind theyre frozen at the year they were in when i graduated). a few of them jus got jobs, while the rest are jus starting their job hunt. so congrats to them. afterwards we walked northwards toward union sq. after grabbing some bubble tea at st. alps me, anna, and dora lounged around in union sq park talking and people watching. very relaxing. afterwards i went home and popped in my tutor friend.

ok, while we’re on the topic of asian cinema…ive been having some discussions of late with a friend about the merits of bringing over a movie like shaolin soccer and dubbing it. we’re both big asian cinema fans…and while i generally watch asian cinema and anime with subtitles, i dont necessarily mind dubs. my friends opinion is that dubbing is archaic, and that it denigrates the original film. on this regard, i feel that its a give and take. dubbing or retaining the original dialogue is dependent on the context of the film. crouching tiger was released with subtitles, and hopefully hero will be too. so what makes them bring over shaolin with dubs? my thought was that while cthd and hero are art-house movies (with the chinese dialogue lending itself to the feel of the movie), shaolin as a comedy has more mass appeal, and as such would be marketed towards as broad a market as possible. which i think would in turn bring more attention to asian cinema. considering that all 3 of these movies dealt with martial arts (which you could say is a narrow cross-section of what asia cinema has to offer) its still pretty premature to say that asian cinemas becoming mainstream here.

in a prior entry i also mentioned roy lee and his industry of marketing asian movies to hollywood for remakes. my friend didnt particularly like remakes, and i would probably share the same thoughts. while i liked the ring alot, and i think it did alot to expose the original to the u.s., i wouldve liked the original ringu to do what it took the remake to do. theres alot of ridiculously good cinema coming out of japan, south korea, and hk. and itd be great if they received more attention in the united states, rather than their (eventual) americanized counterparts. nanako matsushima instead of naomi watts, eun-kyung shin instead of queen latifah, and ji-hyun jun instead of whatever girl takes her place (she’d better be super-cute at least!)

in the meantime, i’ll still go see the dubbed shaolin when it comes out, even tho i have the dvd already. so that hopefully it’ll kick alot of um…grass and they’ll bring over more asian cinema intact.
