abenobashi

i finally got a chance to fire up my new anime series, magical shopping arcade abenobashi this weekend. created by gainax (evangelion, flcl, etc…) and co-produced by madhouse, the 13-episode series rocks all over the place. holy shit is it all kinds of weird. the series follows two friends, sashi and arumi, whos families live and work within the abenobashi arcade in osaka. the areas being redeveloped however, and arumis family is about to move to hokkaido…so sashi’s not too thrilled x2. after an accident that puts arumi’s grandfather in the hospital, all hell breaks loose when theyre somehow tossed into alternate universes where everythings stupid and nothing makes sense. each successive universe is a warped version of their own…where they meet their families and friends, but theyve all taken up different characters in their respective universe. they also constantly run into mune mune, a well-endowed girl who doesnt wear much clothing and constantly rubs her breasts in sashis face, and uetus, a “wizard” who seems to know why they keep getting tossed into different universes…

so in the second episode, they find themselves in a fantasy realm, mune mune kills sashi numerous times, and arumi has to drag his ass back to the king each time to resurrect him. they also manage to take down the evil demon lord of the realm by smacking him stupid with a breast-enlarging sword (that arumi had secretly bought for herself). in the third episode, arumi has her panties stolen by an oni, who they then fight to get her panties back in their transforming robot as they shout out their attacks. in episode eight, theyre thrown in a love hina universe where all the girls fawn over sashi, and arumi (whos been transformed into a mini-oni) is constantly being harassed by a chicken. all the stupidity eventually makes sense, and thats what makes the series rock so much. its also wickedly funny too (dur). and while its all kinds of crazy, the nonsense has a part in the overall story. but besides the seriously weird shit, underneath the nonsense lies a consistent (and eventually serious) theme about people learning how to be happy with the world they live in.

its also pretty damn funny watching arumi forced into a card captor outfit and manipulated to strike poses. and when sashi eventually learns who mune mune really is, itll make you think hard. really really think hard. the people at gainax are thoroughly screwed up.

hotness list redux

[ current selection | massive attack – unfinished sympathy ]
[ feelin’ | like a case of the mondays ]

for valentines weekend, ign decided to have their own list of “hollywood’s hottest valentines“…and shit, i have to say im glad mine is only the ten that it is. while agreeing with three from my list, ign’s fourteen hottest valentines is kinda suspect. theirs consists only of domestic faces, but im wondering to what exacting degree of scrutiny determined their inclusions. *shrug* hey…its their list i suppose. but alison lohman? pish. im such a superficial prick.

> ALISON LOHMAN > recently seen in matchstick men and tim burtons big fish, alison is kinda cute i suppose. kinda. not really…scratch that.
> ANNA PAQUIN > first coinciding entry…number08 on my list. she goes to columbia? woo anna.
> CHRISTINA MILIAN > from the movie torque….ok then. i never saw. regardless, no.
> ELISHA CUTHBERT > hmm, she is pretty cute. tho ive only really seen her in old school (barely)…so maybe ill wait to watch the girl next door before making the call.
> ERIKA CHRISTENSEN > recently seen in the perfect score. hmm…no.
> EVA MENDES > now that they mention it…eva is rather hot. shes like a cross between j.lo (blech) and cindy crawford. tho she is currently dating matt damon. strike one…
> KATE HUDSON > you know…ive never thought her cute in any respect. plus she married chris robinson of the black crowes. never liked them either…
> KEIRA KNIGHTLEY > yummy.
> KIRSTEN DUNST > seriously…do people really find her attractive? i mean, she looks fine in that nice, wholesome way. but no…if my list was the state of new york, shed be on the moon. hmm…that analogy sounded better in my head.
> MANDY MOORE > what? no.
> MICHELLE TRACHTENBERG > from buffy the vampire slayer and the upcoming eurotrip. sorry dude, no.
> NATALIE PORTMAN > scrumdidlyumptious!
> RACHEL BILSON > from the fox show the o.c. maybe…kinda…nah, sorry.
> SCARLETT JOHANSSON > love lost in translation, and im sure she rocks much. but this is a shallow and superficial hotness list. sorry scarlett…you can sit on the sidelines tho and watch the game.

2004 hotness list

while we’re on the topic of whats hot and whats not…i think its time to bring back my top 10 hotness list (…list…list…echo…) i should really stop echoing. me and marisol, back in our more lax days of 2002, use to discuss our opinions on the hottest women out there. we tore thru the always-fun mueller invitational, and then made our own list of cute girls. her (skewed female) perspective placed jennifer connelly and jennifer garner at the top of her list. i scoffed at this and offered her my own list of hotness. the list has since been updated for 2004, but its still picky as ever. and now, the top 10…

2004 HOTNESS LIST

10 | HSU CHI (SHU QI)
apr16.76 | taiwan
lookee who made it into the top 10…pouting no-acting-ability hsu chi. but its all good…this isnt a top 10 of oscar contenders. first seen by the majority of americans in the transporter, this softcore porn actress-turned-legit-actress has actually been acting in taiwan and hk for nearly a decade.
notable work so close, transporter, finding mr. perfect

09 | SHANNYN SOSSAMON
oct03.79 | hawaii
the oft overlooked but always cute shannyn sossamon first got attention in a knights tale opposite heath ledger. she then went on to make crap movies, except rules of attraction, which rocked, but is otherwise still relatively unknown. she djs tho on the side…swoo.
notable work so close, transporter, finding mr. perfect

08 | ANNA PAQUIN
jul24.82 | winnipeg, canada
aw…cute little anna paquin. this oscar winner is currently playing rogue in the x-men movies…which im still amazed didnt suck. its been noted that she stands out a little bit amongst the others on the list. i just tell them she has that cute crooked smile.
notable work x-men, almost famous, x-men 2

one year blogging

[ current selection | weezer – in the garage ]
[ feelin’ | *yawn* ]

has it been a year already? wow. at precisely 11:18am est, it will have been one year since i hopped on the blogging bandwagon and ridden it around like a poseur mofo. technically, this sites only seven months old. my first blog/journal (blurnal?) was on the perennial tween fav, xanga. ah xanga. *reminisces briefly* xanga. i didnt necessarily just decide one day to start up a blog. it was actually my friend jane who originally got me to sign onto xanga and start babbling incoherently. shes since been pretty lax with her journal, but me…its become a bit of therapy one entry at a time.

i should mention that while this is my first online journal, i actually had a similar journal in alot of regards (mentioned before) back in high school. it wasnt necessarily a wonder years-type blah blah journal…it was kind of a repository of random m3ntal notes to supplement my ridiculously awful memory. that journal lasted from january 23, 1996 to august 5, 1998 and actually contained, amongst other things: top 10 music lists, a burned out cornell acceptance letter, a delta phi bid, extensive religious sections, lots of doodles (including the summer post-it galleries), sticky pics, endless ranting, and the super shecret encoded rants. anyone who knew me back then probably saw me carry it around religiously, and knew i almost never let anyone read anything from it. my own grail diary…woot.

i was originally going to save this post for the one-year anniversary of my boredom-induced blogging (the exact date is january 28th), but its prolly more appropriate as a new year retrospective anyhoo. ah 2003…ye flew by so fast. so to kick off another year of breathing oxygen and taking in digestibles, here is a look back at coo happenings from 2003 for none of those that care…

new years eve

current selection | lhb – no transmission
feelin’ | new years-y?

its almost 2004 and the start of a nice non-odd, non-prime number. my new years have for the most part been unspectacular…and one year actually rather pathetic. so on this new years eve, i thought id run down the past new years celebrations from as far back as senior year of high school. word.

(originally from an email to ags…)

95/96 > my senior year of high school was the first good new years celebrations i can remember. scottie had just gotten back from his vacation in florida. so me, fish, casey, and schnitz planned a drive-by kidnapping at jfk. we hopped in caseys suv, drove to jfk, tracked him down, and carted him off as his parents watched on and laughed…bwahaha. we then went straight into manhattan (it was around 8:30ish) since we fig’d hey, why not do the times square thing? everybody needs their first time, no matter how stupid an event it is. so we get there, we stand around, we’re bored, we see dick clark, but we stay til the balls dropped and everybodys spraying champagne…word. we head off…and in the ensuing crowd rush we get separated. fish and schnitz disappear…so after a bit of looking around, the 3 of us head back to the parking garage. i thought we were going to drive around to look for them…but caseys going, “nah…they can find their own way home.” which i thought was not very coo. then i started hearing noises in the back of the suv and was like…oh shit, red rum. then i hear someone whisper, “pss…tell casey to stop at a diner. we’ll hop out after you guys go in…and then we’ll come in and kill casey!” ok then. fish and schnitz somehow managed to sneak into the car in the parking garage and was pretty pissed at casey for not looking for them. so anyway, things didnt go as planned when caseys suv dies about 10 minutes from our town, tho fish and schnitz hop out anyway and make fun of casey for being such a dick. we had to have another friend come pick us up. high school…ahhh…

96/97 > ’97’s new years celebration was back in times square (i think)…except with a bunch of people i didnt give a shit about (mini-high school reunion). it felt pretty artificial. oh, and it was 20 degrees outside. yay!

97/98 > was supposed to be at times square with a friend (i just cant seem to stay away), but we ended up bumming in a hotel room instead (at the milford plaza…one block over.) oops.

98/99 > was at a party with carolyn in her town with people i didnt know and didnt have time to get to know (we got there 10 minutes before midnight). *yawn*

99/00 (the new millenium) > was spent at home because 1) i had just gotten back from a semester in italy and 2) i didnt want to be blown up at the vatican, or times square, or any major gathering of people.

00/01 > my friend ping from london came to visit in time for the 00/01 new years…so i took her and her sis to times square (egad……sigh). after standing in the same spot for about half an hour, ping’s sis got bored and left. after another half an hour, it started to dawn on ping how utterly boring times square really was. so we left around 9ish, grabbed a bite to eat at a restaurant, and then caught a bus back to nj. wooha.

01/02 > …was spent in a diner somewhere. in nj. right. me and fish were jersey cruisin’ for no apparent reason and stopped at a diner for chicken noodle soup in time for midnight. afterwards, we both agreed that once you’ve spent your new years in a diner…in nj…eating chicken noodle soup, everything afterwards is decidedly an improvement.

02/03 > last year…02/03, was spent getting drunk and crazy at a club in taiwan. id say a marked improvement over the prior years, no? while my family was planning our taiwan itinerary, i made it a point to have taipei coincide with new years eve. hmm…i think we actually arrived in taipei new years eve. i went off on my own almost immediately and planned to meet some friends up. the odd thing was that there are a couple of other taiwanese at my company (me and 5…6? others)…and all of them were coincidentally visiting taiwan that specific year. crazy. so i met up with my friend joyce, had din in shi men ding, and then headed to @live, where we actually rung in the new year. the party was boring however, so we left. we met up with another co-worker…eddie, who was at a club called tu. two other people from my company were also there partying…and eddie was friends with the owner of the club, so we were getting free drinks all nite. word!

chinese zodiac stuff…
this years new years will be the first in new york city for me (outside of times square anyhoo). which is coo. and im currently working on my list of resolutions for 2004. its a pretty long list…but i fig the more there are, the more chance ill just randomly hit the marks. my forecast for the new chinese monkey year however doesnt look so hot. its the 4701st chinese year, and its the green monkey year (wood element). according to the stem-branch system, im a green tiger (wood) in the year of the brown horse (earth)…and my lucky element for 2004 is fire (wtf??)…so ill have no luck in 2004. rock! i think i need to read this stuff better…its confusing.

the circumference of a circle

current selection | nothing
feelin’ | jittery

the day of the return of the king premiere and anything i was going to mention of it (as if i hadnt been already all this week and last…and the one before that) is being pushed aside in favor of this bit. a co-worker of mine…tien (last name withheld for the sake of privacy) of tienmao.com was interviewed last nite by fox 5 news. he posted an entry on his blog a while back about the new crossing signs around new york…and how people were taping over certain parts of the sign to make the stop hand into a flipped bird. the entry made its way over to both gawker and new yorkish, which then found its way to someones desk at fox 5 who, being a super-slow day, decided to do a story on it and call up tien and ask to interview him. now im not saying tiens not a photogenic person…the camera does evil evil things to ones face. conversely too…it can also do good things to ugly people. anyhoo, tien is in the former category…and as such, the photo he has of the interview spot isnt the greatest. his heads not really that round. and he isnt really a 300 pound fat asian with a propensity to stay away from barbers and have semi-irregular shepherd moons orbiting his massively dense and buttock-like face. its all the camera. photoshop couldnt even help.

i smelled the most vile rank white castle ive ever walked into today. we headed to white castle to grab lunch and walked straight into the most rank urine smell…ever. ok, maybe not ever, but when ur about to grab urself a lunch, urines the last thing you want to be smelling. cow poops a close second. we werent sure whether someone just pissed themselves in the middle of the white castle, or whether it was the dude next to the entrance that looked especially stank. our plans to eat in were quickly revised to “take-out.”

anyhoo…i wasnt the best student of structures in school. between the cruv-meister and the anomaly that is petru petrova (“ello. i am pet-ru peet-trova. i haf feef-ty pat-ents.“), structures i-iii werent the most exciting (or comprehensible) of classes in my curriculum. today however would make petru proud. with 10 white castles between me and tien, and an extra 4 from another participant…we created the great leaning tower of greasy boxes which formerly held tiny bite-sized yet still fully satisfying white castles. or the “leaning tower of gbwfhtbsysfswc” for short. with a tinge of deconstructivism and no small amount of effort, its only peers are the san pietro of roma, walter gropius’ bauhaus, and last weeks great stack of take-out chinese food, also known as the great stack of tocf
