playing catch-up / pre-august warm-up

look at that…suburban lethargy overwhelmed me again, draining all desire to post. but i saw this coming, and jotted down notes anyhoo. rewinding what i think is 2 weeks…thursday drinkies at brass monkey with g+r, steph, kyoko, and dano. itd been a while since we’d been to brass monkey, probably since we had moved offices at my old job from the meat packing district to the west village. damn that place got big, and not in a figurative sense…they added a second floor and what looked like a roof deck. cripes. i crashed at g+r’s too because we were out late, and i wanted to “practice” the commute from my soon-to-be new home to work. shit, its faster than getting their from alphabet city! thats just wrong…

my friday plans with di got postponed to saturday brunch…oops. so satty morning i met up at essex with di and her roomie and had a yum brunch, then roamed around the lower east side.

the following wednesday i had din at dieci with m, thursday with marisol at…some italian place in hells kitchen (cant remember name, but it was yum). then sunday was a semi-bai bai dinner for sally at luzzu’s and then after-din ice cream from alphabet scoop. sallys still around and all, but will be heading back to the boonies (aka: ithaca) for grad school in august. boo-urns.

thursday was foodies with steph at blue ribbon, where i had some fancy fried-chicken…yum yum. and friday i met up with g+r for some sushi action at hasaki. chef’s omakase…damn that was some good sashimi. and shit, if andrew zimmerns going to be oohing all over the (baby-poop-looking) sea urchin, ill give it a try too. i have to admit, it was mighty damn tasty.

k thats all my brain can remember at this point. whatever. its almost august eh…august is going to be one crazy month. on the to-do list…sis’ berfday coming up, cribbs is coming up to visit from texas (word!), mins wedding that same weekend, alice and lysha are coming to visit from amsterdam (omg!), then a certain someone is having a massive turning-30 blowout, then closing on my new apartment (finally!). hoo-wee…fucking a.

long recap, and 4th of july!

ugh…suburban lethargy overwhelming me. much love to those that live in suburbs, but hell…how do you do it? even as im writing this, i feel the need to…not…write this. because id rather be doing nothing. it doesnt help either that this house is hot as balls. yes we have central air. but do we use it? of course not…that would make sense. so it continues….ugh.

i think im just going to go straight down a bullet-point list. because at this point in time, ive already let the posts linger too long. and most, if not all the details are lost anyhoo save for what i jotted down. waaay back when was din and drinks at chinatown brasserie with steph, jj, kyoko, and co. saturday i packed, sunday i made the move back to joisey. monday was dororo with sara at the nyaff (weird shit). tuesday was ippudo with jess. the rest of the week was interspersed with picking up loose shit at the apartment and going out (and subsequently delaying having to go back home). memory gets hazy at this point because i didnt bother with notes. aisa, her bf ted, and plusan were in nyc visiting…we met up satty for some roaming, then din at oh taisho. sunday was wall*e with sean, anna, and sally…damn what a good movie. monday i met up with plusan again to take her to delta grill…yum. the rest of the weeks hazy again. then friday was some nyc roaming, with wanted thrown in there, along with some moma with sean and anna, followed by a spankin’ bbq on i4’s rooftop for the fourth of july. word. ill put up pictures at some later date…

last days in e.vil

mmm…my days in e.vil are numbered. my new apartment is moving along at the moment, and our lease is up at the end of june. so…we’re all heading oot. fonz is moving down the street sunday, and its back to the burbs for me til my apartments ready…ack! i havent lived with my parents since i first graduated college…thats gonna be interesting. and when i say “interesting”, i mean fuck, hurry up with the apartment. and as a friend pointed out to me, this is probably the last time ill live in e.vil for the foreseeable future. unless e.vil real estate prices miraculously drop, or i become filthy rich. yea. so…bai bai e.vil. bai bai alphabet city…its been a fun 5 years (+1 at the 13th street apartment).

so ive been packing all week long. i have alot of shit. why do i have alot of shit? hmm…doesnt matter, im tossing alot of it before i move. but before i get to that, ill backtrack (again) to a few weeks ago.

was it last wednesday? i think it was…last wednesday i met up with di and her roommate rebecca for some italian (via japanese) at dieci. i still like that place alot…cozey, good food, and chill atmosphere.

friday was drinkies at ace bar for mk’s “i got a dwi and im losing my license!” drink-a-thon. skee-ball and big buck hunter all around.

saturday what did i do? hmm…nothing really. i picked up some packing boxes and a new router/wireless receiver, because ill be damned if i dont have internet in my room at my parents place.

sunday was supposed to be biking with g, except it was raining. so i took my bike back upstairs, came down, and saw the rain stop in front of my eyes. fuck you mother nature! whatever, biking got appended to just brunch with g+r up in harlem. hey, its my future neighborhood…i should take in the sights. after brunch, we just chilled at their apartment watching lara croft mst2k style.

this week…pack pack pack. and tossing shit out. fresh start yo.

wednesday was din with karen at um…this malay restaurant on 17th near union square. cant remember the name, and cant find it listed anywhere (must be new), but it was pretty good. we chilled out at 71 irving afterwards…mmmm.

and thursday was our own little bbq-fest at hill country with steph, ky, dano, and yoko…woot. tons of of briskets, ribs, beer, and more beer. it was good.

drinking marathons and bbq fests

i have a legitimate reason this time for the tardy post. no really! im just now coming out of a heinous stomach virus/flu/something im not really sure of. which i originally thought was all alcohol-induced, but sifting thru web md and getting some feedback, it was probably that and something else i ate. *shrug* well whatever it was, it sucked. my appetites still not back at 100%…more like 60% judging by how much food i can finish before getting full. hmm…

PRE-STOMACH CRAZINESS
rewind back to two weeks ago, because its been a good two weeks. tuesday was din with jess at chiyono. i forget who first recommended chiyono, but its this small joint in the middle of curry alley on 6th. pretty nice and quiet, especially on a tuesday night. wednesday was an unplanned din with ivor and company at 26 seats, friday was din at max and then drinks at solas with sean, anna, and sally. margie was in town satty, so we got to hang out during the day…yay! we strolled around manhattan furniture shopping for my upcoming new apartment. oh right, that was thursday btw…signed and sent back a contract for a new apartment (to buy that is). woot! well, i should save my over-enthusiasm til i actually get the contract back with a thumbs up on it. this is new york…weird shit happens.

saturday was g’s bye bye drinkies (shes quit…yay!) at la bottega at the maritime hotel. this, btw, was the start of a week of pain, but i didnt know this. g bailed a bit earlier than anticipated (she got trashed the night before), but a few of us continued on…and on…and on…til er, 5am, followed by early morning tacos from san locos. i think i shouldve known better, but ya…sick time.

FUCK
the weekend and the following week was spotty from here on out given that my stomach started feeling reeeal funky. but anyhoo, i met up with grace who was in town tuesday nite for soba-ya. i couldnt eat much, but hey…she was visiting. friday was g’s celebrations, part 2, this time at sala and primarily food-based rather than alcohol-based. stomach was still funky, so didnt eat much, and definitely didnt drink alcohol…whew. i was however out again til 3am with mich and mk (sober tho…i was sober).

addendum
noted (and recurring) pet peeve…people who you meet and hang out with, have fun, get numbers for, then call, just to get no response. *sigh*

BABBQF!
yea, that acronym doesnt work, does it? big apple bbq festival! woot! all that non-drinking the night before was worth it, because by saturday, i was feeling ten times better, just in time for some bbq at madison square park. side note…holy fuck was it hot out! hot and humid=shit. but it was bbq, and getting a heat stroke wouldnt stop me from getting bbq. id been going to the big apple bbq festival every year since 2005, and id be damned if i missed this years. i met up with dano and company at the park. he’d been running late, so by that time id already gone thru one round at blackjack’s bbq from south carolina…yum yum. when they got there, we staked out big bob gibsons bbq for the follow-up. i’d seen chris lilly of big bobs on one of the bbq challenges on the food network, and was curious to see just how good his sauce was. yea, it was good. like, super good. the chopped pork was soft and yum too…thumbs up. sadly, this was the first year since i started going to the bbq festival that i chose not to go to the perennial favorite, salt lick bbq of texas. sorry, but i gotta branch out.

oh, and we caught kung-fu panda afterwards too. jack black rocks! almost as good as pixar’s stable, and definitely the best of the dreamworks’ lot. it made even sitting amongst a whole theaters worth of pre-pubescents tolerable.

three weeks of catching up…

argh i hate when i let old posts sit around collecting dust. now i have to run down a laundry list of things i did, otherwise they’ll just get lost permanently to the big black hole that is my memory. good thing i jotted this shit down. and i’m trying out my new post category too…foodage! because whats the point of posting about all these places i eat at if i cant even find them after theyre posted?

SOME STUFF
k, so amongst the things ive done since i got back from tokyo er…3 weeks ago…tomoe with sally and anna, afterwork drinkies with renee at ñ, and then some midtown noshing at hagi with m. k, thats one week down.

HERES MORE STUFF
i checked out the superheroes exhibit at the met with renee, then had korean at chung moo ro, saturday i turned in my transaction form for an apartment (omg yay!) then chilled out at g’s place, followed on sunday with some brunch at mogador with sally, then perusing hot furniture at the icff, sean and anna (ooh, sub-studio) at the stationary show, then din at gasparino’s with jess. k thats another week…

ALMOST UP TO DATE
tuesday ramen at setagaya with jess, wednesday was foodage at go with di and sara, then a midnight showing of indiana jones and the crystal skull thingy with sara and her friends. it was good, but it was weird, because it didn’t completely feel like an indy movie. and as an attachment to the prior trilogy, last crusade definitely was the better last movie. anyhoo, i usually dont mention what i do for lunch, but i thought hill country was worth mentioning since it was awesome…texas bbq ftw! oh and that was followed up with more ramen at ippudo with sally. friday drinkies with pho after i dont even know how long its been at b bar, followed by more drinkies at ten degrees. satty was dinner at luzzos with sally, anna, and sean, then some iron-man in union square woot. ok, thats a long list. should i attach a picture? would that help? let me go look for one…

tokyo 2008 day.07

last full day in tokyo…sigh. we started it off with a trip to the tsukiji fish market. yea…not at 5 am or anything. sorry…i dont do that. it was more like 10am. chika had offered to take dano and i around the fish market, since she was familiar with the market, having shopped there numerous times before as a chef. the fish (and various aquatic species) area was still pretty busy, even at 10 am. when we werent dodging giant fish heads on the floor, we were dodging the carts that darted up and down the aisles. and it all surprisingly didnt smell fishy!

we headed back to the hotel to rest and eat lunch, and then i headed back out to akihabara for some last minute perusing. friday was the release date for the new dvd of the evangelion reboot…so i went looking for it. well it wasnt that hard to find…the shit was all over akihabara. but when i finally did check out the special edition dvd, i found out that it didnt have any english subtitles. fuck! argh…suckage. so i decided not to pick it up. *sigh* i continued roaming around some more, then roamed shibuya for dvds and music. i rejoined g+r at g’s house in shibuya for some home cooking with her family…yum! nice way to cap a vacation.

we wandered around ginza the next morning before heading back to our hotel to catch the shuttle to narita. and then we landed in newark airport, i fucked around doing nothing for a week, and now here i am…back home and not in tokyo. *sigh* <3 tokyo.

REMAINDERS
and now to tack on what i did since getting back. i met up with steph and jj er…last week…at oh taisho. then i had ippudo with jess sometime last week…whatever day…cant remember at this point. friday was mario karting at sean and annas. i visited my sister and my niece sunday, since i had a ton of toys from japan and i hadnt seen my niece since before heading off to amsterdam. and yesterday i had din with di and her friend sara in fort greene (brookyln! omfg!) at ici, which was yum.

tokyo 2008 day.06

coming down to the last two days of the trip…pooters. thursday was started with haircuts for g and dano. g needed a trim, and dano wanted a super-japanese haircut. some of the styles he was looking at in his hair style magazine were pretty frightening…ranging from glay, to emo anime character, to jesus hair. yea, curly jesus hair. he picked out one of the better (ie: normal) styles…pointed to the picture, and away they snipped. me and r headed off to wile away the time why they got their hair snipped. in the span of half an hour wandering shibuya, i managed to blow $300+…fuck! after hitting the $300 mark, we scurried back to the salon so i couldnt do any more damage. shit shit shit i was doing so good til now.

after g and dano finished their swishy hair stylin’, we caught a nice japanese lunch, then went sneaker shopping in daikanyama. after everybody (literally) got a pair (or two), g+r and dano decided to go rest up back at g’s house in shibuya, and i decided to continue roaming daikanyama (one of my favorite neighborhoods). it started raining tho…so yea, that was the suck. i roamed a bit, checked out the various stores (while hiding my cc), then grabbed a late afternoon snack at the mermaid cafe before hustling over to shinjuku to meet up with the crew again. chika found me at the station, and we waited for the rest of the crew to get there before wandering into the golden gai area for dinner reservations at cha-cha (name…? guess so). which was swishy. after din, we roamed shinjuku and hung out at advocates bar, which for anyone who does their homework, does NOT in any way, happen to support your theories. ;p

tokyo 2008 day.05

wednesday was our long-awaited onsen roadtrip out of tokyo. g booked us a relaxing day at the amagi-so onsen three hours outside of tokyo. so we headed oot in the morning out of the dense cityscape into the countryside. we had a huge kaiseki lunch when we got there…sashimi, boar meat, grilled fish, the list goes on…yum yum. we rested a bit after lunch before going to get changed and head out to the outdoor springs. amagi-so is a unisex onsen that also lets you wear swimsuits, for those of us that are a bit prude…or just want to hang out with our friends of the opposite sex. we went thru the range of temperatures, from lukewarm to omfg. the omfg didnt actually feel too bad since we had been hopping from spring to spring. but after relaxing next to the waterfall for a bit, then going back in for a dip, the actual temperature became apparent. holy shit hot. we rested a bit after our dip, then started our three hour ride back to tokyo. we made a pitstop at a wasabi center…that was interesting. but then we got back to tokyo! yea!

we dropped our stuff off at g’s parents place before heading out for an italian dinner at capricciosa nearby…where we ordered like a pizza, three pasta bowls, and a bunch of other dishes we probably shouldnt have. ugh…stuffed. we continued on afterwards for an end-of-the-night drinks at an izakaya in omote-sando. wew!

tokyo 2008 day.04

tuesday was jane’s last day with us, so we got an early start to akihabara, since neither jane nor dano had been before. we roamed thru the arcades and electronics shops, and ended up going thru the 8 flrs of the akihabara mandarake. woot geek. jane left us at tokyo station in the afternoon to catch the shink back to ishinomaki…*sniff*, bye jane! we soldiered on and met up with g+r in ebisu to take a day-trip to yokohama…woot! yokohama was a short ride south, and we visited the yokohama docks first, called the osanbashi and designed by foreign office architects. very nice. we then roamed up and down the disturbingly clean streets of yokohama chinatown. for those that haven’t ever been, imagine your typical chinatown. now take away all the filth and garbage on the streets and the smell of fish in the air. yea, thats yokohama chinatown…a surreal super-clean version of the chinatowns you’re used to. we had a nice big chinese dinner (i even had shark fin soup…yum), then hopped back in the car to head back to tokyo. on the way back, we stopped by odaiba to scope out the rockin’ night views of tokyo. we made our way thru the various shopping decks including a whole section made to look like vintage 1960’s tokyo, then hopped back in the car and went home. whew!

tokyo 2008 day.03

monday was a free day, so jane, dano, and i took the yamanote north to roam ginza and the tokyo forums. as much we grabbed ramen at jangara, then wandered aimlessly thru ura-hara. after getting pooted out from all the walking, we took a break back at the hotel before meeting up with g+r in nakano for dinner. we headed to one of g’s favorite spots that we just referred to as master’s (the head honcho’s master…never even got the name of his restaurant). anyhoo, he served us every kind of chicken dish possible, roasted, sashimi, etc. it was all yum. we even tried out his custom shochu drinks. the first batch…mixed with coffee…was pretty good. he ran out of that tho, so we switched over to his other shochu batch, which put me to sleep. like seriously, not trashed…just sleeeepy. *gurgle* the rest of the nites sorta blurry…
