new years eve

feelin’ | new years-y?

its almost 2004 and the start of a nice non-odd, non-prime number. my new years have for the most part been unspectacular…and one year actually rather pathetic. so on this new years eve, i thought id run down the past new years celebrations from as far back as senior year of high school. word.

(originally from an email to ags…)

95/96 > my senior year of high school was the first good new years celebrations i can remember. scottie had just gotten back from his vacation in florida. so me, fish, casey, and schnitz planned a drive-by kidnapping at jfk. we hopped in caseys suv, drove to jfk, tracked him down, and carted him off as his parents watched on and laughed…bwahaha. we then went straight into manhattan (it was around 8:30ish) since we fig’d hey, why not do the times square thing? everybody needs their first time, no matter how stupid an event it is. so we get there, we stand around, we’re bored, we see dick clark, but we stay til the balls dropped and everybodys spraying champagne…word. we head off…and in the ensuing crowd rush we get separated. fish and schnitz disappear…so after a bit of looking around, the 3 of us head back to the parking garage. i thought we were going to drive around to look for them…but caseys going, “nah…they can find their own way home.” which i thought was not very coo. then i started hearing noises in the back of the suv and was like…oh shit, red rum. then i hear someone whisper, “pss…tell casey to stop at a diner. we’ll hop out after you guys go in…and then we’ll come in and kill casey!” ok then. fish and schnitz somehow managed to sneak into the car in the parking garage and was pretty pissed at casey for not looking for them. so anyway, things didnt go as planned when caseys suv dies about 10 minutes from our town, tho fish and schnitz hop out anyway and make fun of casey for being such a dick. we had to have another friend come pick us up. high school…ahhh…

96/97 > ’97’s new years celebration was back in times square (i think)…except with a bunch of people i didnt give a shit about (mini-high school reunion). it felt pretty artificial. oh, and it was 20 degrees outside. yay!

97/98 > was supposed to be at times square with a friend (i just cant seem to stay away), but we ended up bumming in a hotel room instead (at the milford plaza…one block over.) oops.

98/99 > was at a party with carolyn in her town with people i didnt know and didnt have time to get to know (we got there 10 minutes before midnight). *yawn*

99/00 (the new millenium) > was spent at home because 1) i had just gotten back from a semester in italy and 2) i didnt want to be blown up at the vatican, or times square, or any major gathering of people.

00/01 > my friend ping from london came to visit in time for the 00/01 new years…so i took her and her sis to times square (egad……sigh). after standing in the same spot for about half an hour, ping’s sis got bored and left. after another half an hour, it started to dawn on ping how utterly boring times square really was. so we left around 9ish, grabbed a bite to eat at a restaurant, and then caught a bus back to nj. wooha.

01/02 > …was spent in a diner somewhere. in nj. right. me and fish were jersey cruisin’ for no apparent reason and stopped at a diner for chicken noodle soup in time for midnight. afterwards, we both agreed that once you’ve spent your new years in a diner…in nj…eating chicken noodle soup, everything afterwards is decidedly an improvement.

02/03 > last year…02/03, was spent getting drunk and crazy at a club in taiwan. id say a marked improvement over the prior years, no? while my family was planning our taiwan itinerary, i made it a point to have taipei coincide with new years eve. hmm…i think we actually arrived in taipei new years eve. i went off on my own almost immediately and planned to meet some friends up. the odd thing was that there are a couple of other taiwanese at my company (me and 5…6? others)…and all of them were coincidentally visiting taiwan that specific year. crazy. so i met up with my friend joyce, had din in shi men ding, and then headed to @live, where we actually rung in the new year. the party was boring however, so we left. we met up with another co-worker…eddie, who was at a club called tu. two other people from my company were also there partying…and eddie was friends with the owner of the club, so we were getting free drinks all nite. word!

chinese zodiac stuff…
this years new years will be the first in new york city for me (outside of times square anyhoo). which is coo. and im currently working on my list of resolutions for 2004. its a pretty long list…but i fig the more there are, the more chance ill just randomly hit the marks. my forecast for the new chinese monkey year however doesnt look so hot. its the 4701st chinese year, and its the green monkey year (wood element). according to the stem-branch system, im a green tiger (wood) in the year of the brown horse (earth)…and my lucky element for 2004 is fire (wtf??)…so ill have no luck in 2004. rock! i think i need to read this stuff better…its confusing.

current selection | the bastards downstairs
feelin’ | relaxed

i dont know when this all happened, but all of a sudden my parents are technologically savvy. wtf? i went back to nj wednesday for the holidays and i find that my dad (in the last few weeks) ordered himself a new computer (complete with flat panel) and broadband connection (finally). this was all pretty surprising in and of itself because these people dont even have cell phones. but then my mom asks me to set up the old computer in my old room so she can continue playing her computer games. wtf? and then my dad whips out his new portable dvd player (with screen) to me and my sis for shits and giggles. wtf? then he tells me how hes shopping online for a new 5.0 megapixel digital cam and asked me to show him some of the new digital slrs from nikon and canon. wtf. this is basically all coming out of left field. oh, and my dad made a quip about how my mom has too many email accounts. holy fuck, whats going on? the pope might as well trot in thru the front doors too, roll up his sleeves, and say “dude, check my tattoo. its wicked!” before this i was under the impression my dad used email strictly for work and my mom didnt even know how to use a mouse. even tho i was initially taken back by all their tech-prowess…i fig this can only inevitably work to my benefit. maybe ill get a digital slr out of them yet…woo.

feelin’ | a bit ache-y

m3ntal note…dont drink oj after a combination of liquor and coffee and b4 going to bed. i feel…weird. monday was shabu shabu luvin’ at shabu tatsu with sally and betty. we met up in union square first and walked thru the holiday market for a bit before heading down to 9th st. after some yum hot-potting, we met up with aarij and two other younger cornellians. they were two years their junior, which makes me four years their senior…ack! wtf. we headed to the coffee shop for drinks (and din for them…since they hadnt eaten yet). while some of their food is good and their caipirinhas yum, i generally dont go to the coffee shop b/c the models-in-training wait staff suck and their prices are ridiculous. so its no surprise that our waitress sucks donkey balls. we thought she was on crack or something. betty mentioned that she recognized her from mtv’s made? or some model search? i have no idea. i obviously dont watch enough tv. shes generally nice and perky, but in that “im high on speed“-type way, and she mucked up two of our orders. bugger that. everybody heads home afterwards…but since i was still wide awake and one of the younger cornellians, samit, had to wait for a later train back home, we headed to cosi for some coffee. the other girl nancy had just gotten back from their semester in roma, and samit was off to roma in january, so we were talking about things to do in and around roma…and things to watch out for. first and foremost…the apartment cleaning ladies are bizatches! things have gone “missing” before, and we’ve seen them smoking and just chilling in our apartment. wtf. otherwise good times…good times. except for the di per di cashiers. thats another story.

pre-holiday weekend

current selection | alex gopher – the child
feelin’ | half a bagel-y

mmm…bagel. today’s bagel, c/o the diner near the bus stop, is quite good. all toasty on the outside, slightly firm on the inside, and a butt-load of cream cheese. rock. this past weekends plans surprising didnt poo on itself, b/c there were alot of chances for things to go poot. i took the path train to hoboken to meet fish and head up to edgewater to catch the last samurai. do you maybe think i used too many “to’s” in that sentence? whatever. i dont particularly like tom cruise, but i cant say i hated the movie. it was quite entertaining…even if it did scream braveheart+dances with wolves (with a side of gladiator), and tom cruise should have died but instead bags himself an asian hottie, and that the ending was painfully obvious half an hour into the movie. ah well…of particular note tho were the gorgeous costumes (the samurai armor especially), ken watanabe, tom cruises japanese (surprisingly), and ken watanabe again. honorable mentions go to the ninjas (they couldve been more badass…refer to red shadow), tom cruises grief, and tom cruises self-doubt. i felt your pain, dude.

after the movie, fish drove me back down to hoboken and i hopped the next train into manhattan. a few of us were planning on hitting the giant robot make-up party (the first one was caught in last weekends snowstorm), so i had basically planned around the movie time and the party following it immediately. betty, dora, and alice got to the party just as i did…very uncanny. it was moderately packed, but was missing a particular element of fun. the music was all over the place too, so we had about 3 rounds, snatched some copies of giant robot and cds, and headed out. me, betty, and alice cabbed it to k-town for some sul long tang…which as stated in prior entries, tastes extra-yum on cold nites.

feelin’ | swell

last nites gym outing was tossed in favor of din with shannan and her friend nisha. it was a tough call b/c on one hand, im feeling rather poo’d and out of shape again, but on the other hand she mentioned they were going for japanese. mmm…no willpower. we were eating around midtown east, so we walked around rockefeller center while waiting for shannans friend to get out of work. to be completely honest, i dont think ive actually been to the tree at rockefeller since high school…oops. it was pretty coo…and big. yea…big. massive. and now im wanting a tree too, but its prolly too late for that. ah well…next year. we strolled on, met up with nisha, and headed to onigashima on 55th. i got a big bowl of curry udon and a side of spicy tuna…followed by green tea tiramisu for dessert. yuummm. the tiramisu was especially yum…different from the one at takashimaya’s tea box…and a little better. afterwards, i thought i could get back to my apartment in time for gym…but it took me another 45 minutes to get from 55th down to alphabet city. pooters! ah well…this weekend ill work out. no really.

feelin’ | no longer frosty. heat…huzzah!

ah…heat. my skin tone is back to its nice tanned yellow chinky self. i went on a bit of a shopping spree yesterday during work. we’re currently working towards this project with rem koolhaas at the moment…and he wanted these glass samples to oogle at. so we had them made…and theyre being shipped to rotterdam today. before theyre shipped off tho, we wanted to take photos of them. ive been trying to get my company to invest in some photo studio equipment for a while now…and yesterday i finally got it. woo! we wanted the photos fast, so i was driven over to b+h after lunch and i picked up portable lowell tota-lights and a photo tent. the tent was…um…bigger than i imagined. i mean, they wrote that it was 4’x4’x4’…but it didnt sink in how big a 4′ cube was til i opened it up and set it on the ground. shit. anyhoo, the lights rock (we used the same ones when we took photos of our models at school) and we used a corner of my supervisors office to pitch the tent in (snicker). my other supervisor also lent the use of his butt-kicking sony cybershot…the one with the big carl zeiss lens. as far as prosumer digital cameras go, the things eats the other cameras for breakfast. the next step in my budding photo studio however is the procurement of a digital slr….yum. that’ll however be when i actually get out of debt. hmm, no wait…thats never. so ill prolly get one next year.

annual first mug of hot cocoa
i think im running out of good synonyms for random. i could of course just use the word random, but wheres the fun in that? to mark the first substantial snow fall of the season, today is the annual first mug of hot cocoa. ok, its not so much a tradition or anything, but maybe i want to make it one…right-o. most winters, i usually go thru about 3-5 mugs of hot cocoa a day. but that was back when i lived at home and i had an inexhaustible supply of hot cocoa. now ill have to cut it down to maybe…2-3 mugs a day. cripes. we’ll see how long that lasts.

no weekend
all my plans for this weekend got shat on by the so-so snowfall. i dont even think it was that bad, but it was bad enough for people to not want to leave their warm apartments. argh…i suppose i cant blame them. i came across this random article on cnn about the cost increase for the 12 days of christmas. you know…ten lords-o-leaping, five goool-den rings, and all that crap. someone actually researches the cost of all the products/livestock/services (leaping lords and all…) and comes up with a total cost for the 12 days. theyve apparently been doing this since 1984…shit. this years index determined that there was a 19% jump from last years index to $65,264.00. the biggest jump came from the seven swans-a-swimming…up nearly 70% from their price from the previous year. cripes. and the four calling birds was the second highest jump, at 26.6%. things i did not know.

things to look forward to:
> festivus celebrations at anna and sally’s
> return of the king in a week and a half
> sleeping alot during the holidays
> aggies visit in january

first snow

feelin’ | flaky

argh…first snow of the year season! yea…not the first of the year right? that would probably be sometime back in january. dur. the snow seems to be churning outside like an asbestos storm. woo. while i dont really think this snow will stick (it looks dry and powdery), its flying horizontally, which gives it an added “oooh shit, that looks bad.” according to the fun weather charts, i think winters finally here…as opposed to its prior indecisiveness (im 40 degrees. no jus kidding, im 70 degrees. whups, back to 30. ha, gotcha…its 80 degrees outside!) time to break out the heavy sweaters…
