random wednesdays

random wednesdays! woo! its wednesday, right? i cant really tell anymore…the work weeks kinda become just montuwedthursdays, followed by drinkday, sleepday, and bumday. anyhoo, wednesdays post is gonna be all over the place.

KEIRA=SINGLE
tien saw it fit to inform me that keira knightley just broke up with her boyfriend recently, and half the world rejoiced…word. i know, stalkerish right? whatever, with the release of that new documentary my date with drew, maybe i should do something. right, thats it. i think i forgot to take my medication…

50 HOURS STRAIGHT
also in the news, and less stalker-y, bo-ra sent me an article about a guy in south korea who died the other day from playing online games for 2 days. he basically played online games at a cybercafe for 50 hours straight, only took breaks to take a wiz and nap on a cot, finished his marathon, then keeled over and died from heart failure a few minutes later. thats like, super. i dont think this is the first time that something like this has happened in south korea either. crazy fuckers. now while its sad that he died, you cant help but think to yourself how pathetic you’d have to be to quit your job to devote more time playing games (as the article pointed out). hello life.

OLIVER TWIST
where the fuck did this come from? i just thought it funny to tack this onto the end of this post. theres a new trailer out for roman polanskis new oliver twist. roman polanskis making a new oliver twist? who knew. anyhoo, for you dickens fans out there.

kimchi chic

mmm…kimchi. theres a coo read from the ny times about the rise of korean cuisine in nyc. the article looks into the emergence of korean foodage, the old-school bastion of k-town on 32nd, and of the emerging non-traditional korean restaurants that have been appearing, driven by a newer generation of korean-americans. (traditional) korean foods a big thumbs-up in my book…and i suppose ive been trained (in small part by korean friends) to stick with k-town for our korean grub, but ive always been curious about some korean restaurants that have sprung up outside of k-town. the article brings up some of the differences between the traditional and newer fare, which has as much to do with ideology as it is with cuisine.

two of the restaurants mentioned in the article are actually in my neighborhood and are one and the same…muzy and temple. i had wanted to check out muzy a few years back before walking by it one day and noticing that it had closed. and then when temple opened not too long after that, i never got around to trying it. maybe ill take a trip over soon. and im doing a double-take…the owner of temple is only 23? yikes.

london wins, nyc loses

ah…as an addendum (and a personal notation), nyc lost the bid for the 2012 olympics. poosticks. london went on to win the bid, which was a bit of a surprise too. couldve sworn paris had it locked down. half of me is relieved that nyc wouldnt be subjected to the crazy shit that would accompany the olympics (assuming that im even in nyc seven years from now), while the other half of me is kind of disappointed that thom maynes olympic village wont be built. ah well.

ginormous chinese malls

giant malls invade china! so not only have the chinese picked up the bad american habit of um…becoming fat-asses, but now theyve also embraced the righteous suburban mall culture. the new malls of china are bigger! crazier! a billion stories tall! they figure, hey, we’ve got plenty of land and alot of child labor….why not go ahead and make the biggestest mall imaginable? i say more power to them. having been raised in new jersey, we did nothing but thrive on the mall culture. you would relate with other new jerseyans not by what town you were from, but what highways you were near and which mall you frequented. i was part of the rt 46 willowbrook clan. we would fight prolonged skirmishes with the evil rt 80 rockaway contingency and their armored divisions.

too sexy for her books

todays “highly amusing article of the day” comes in the form of this cnn article. a court dimissed the lawsuit filed by desiree goodwin, a harvard library assistant, against harvard that claimed she was discriminated against because she was merely the “pretty girl who wore sexy outfits, low cut blouses, and tight pants.” oh, and she was also discriminated against because of her race (shes black) and gender…according to her after she was denied promotions 7 times. the court summarily tossed her lawsuit out the window.

first and foremost…shes black? shit, i couldnt tell. secondly, 5 of the 7 promotions she was denied went to other women…so, right. and third, i wouldnt say shes all that. shes not ugly or anything, but on the halo scale of hotness, shes a solid 6. i wouldnt discriminate you desiree, because youre not that “pretty girl”…youre that “better-than-average” girl.

coping with lifes annoyances

funny ny times article on tips to cope with lifes annoyances. things such as starbucks tall, venti, and grande, junk mail, and phone menus. my personal favorite is the guy who stuffed sheet metal and thick paper into business reply envelopes from junk mail. his junk mail subsequently tapered off drastically. hmm, ill have to try that myself. i have my own small peeves of everyday life, which i generally have malicious ways of dealing with. people rushing into the subway train as i get out, or trying to rush past on stairs…i usually stick my elbows out. buggers.

lobsters and gay bodyguards

[ audio selection | crowded house – dont dream its over ]

i know i know, its march. i need a new banner. is there anything besides st. pattys day in march? b/c you know im all for the green shades, but it feels so overused. bleh, i know ill just get lazy and just slap a green background up with shamrocks…and a new babe-o-the-month.

WE LOVE PINCHY
in todays edition of what-the-fuck? news, i mosey over to cnn this morning, and on the front page is the header “bubba the lobster dies after being moved to zoo“. ok, sure. bubba, a giant 22 lb lobster (lobsters are usually 1.5 lbs) has sadly passed away en route to a zoo. marine biologists estimated bubba to be around 30-50 years old when he died. holy shit, i didnt even know crustaceans could live that long. the aforementioned marine biologists then proceeded to boil bubba and flavor him with a light garnishing of parsley and thyme.

WTF?
and this ones just for kicks. a coworker mentioned the other day how duane “the rock” johnson would be playing a gay country-singing bodyguard in an upcoming movie, and my immediate reaction was something along the lines of wtf? so today i coincidentally saw a post on ign about…well, the rock playing a gay country-singing bodyguard in the forthcoming movie be cool. weird. highlight of article…and apparently the movie, will be the rocks rendition of loretta lynn’s “you ain’t woman enough (to take my man)“. more power to ya rock…more power to ya.
