and as an added bonus too, aicn has a coo interview with christopher doyle, the cinematographer of hero. aside from the fact that doyle is reportedly a drunk sketchy dude who habitually chases young asian girls, hes still a rockin’ cinematographer. most people are probably familiar with doyles work with wong kar kai…that is, every single movie wong kar wai’s ever directed had doyle as the cinematographer. he just has an incredible eye for details and nuances, which is readily evident in the sheer beauty of hero. so take a look at the interview, then go rent all of wong kar wais movies, and then go watch hero on friday. word.
> christopher doyle interview (via aicn)

i met christopher doyle a few weeks ago…
in apple bar (on nyu campus). he was in town
to give a lecture to nyu kids i think. mmm…
chris went to have a drink with some of the
students at a local bar. my friend phil was
in the bar and happened to see him.
he called me up. (round 1am or so)
i was ironically in my bed, ready to sleep,
reading “a cloud in trousers” (by
christopher doyle… a book of film stills
and his photographs).
he tells me he’s in the bar with chris. i drop
the phone get dressed, and find a pen (so that
he can autograph my book).
i get to the bar like 45 minutes later. i see
chris. he pretty much looks exactly as he does
in that photo. hahah. he’s chattin it up with
two female students. hahahah.
i wanted to talk to him, but i didn’t really know
how to strike up a conversation. i was a bit too
star struck…
(chris is probably the
influential artist in my life,
i picked up my very first camera right
after i saw the film “chunking express”
and i literally try to model my career
directly after his — DPin’indy films
and shooting commercial/fashion photos…
anyways).
i sort of walked up to him and said…
“hi mr. doyle may i have your autograph????”
(bows head in humbleness and holds book
“a cloud in trousers” in front of himself
using two outstretched arms)
chris looked at me and laughed. the girls he was
talking to said “uhhh you have his book??”
i said, “its a good book!”
chris signed it. and then i asked him if i
could buy him a drink. he respectuflly declined.
he took a few steps out and looked at everyone,
“thank you for a wonderful time, but i must go
now”.
(he placed his two hands palm to palm, and
brought them to his forehead and bowed).
i look out the window. i see this early
20s 6 foot tall gorgeous korean model standing
outside, tappin her foot. chris goes up to
her, with sort of this apologetic but like cutesy
smile, kisses her. and the two walk off…
hahahahah.
the dude is like 5 foot tall 60 year old white
guy. mmmm anyways…
i hope i get to meet him again sometime.
he was coo.
