wow, its good to know that there are alot of other dvd whores out there like me. well, like me…but with ridiculously more money and much crazier ambitions. theres a ny times article today about people who habitually buy dvds instead of renting. take for instance todd robertson of des moines, iowa, who has a dvd collection of over 1,400 titles and never rents. fucking nutter.
while many collectors arent as fanatical as him, there are still many collectors who have amassed collections of 1,000 and more. even crazier still are those who spend ridiculous amounts of money for rare dvds. the article spoke with kyle schember who, as a dvd buyer for a client, had spent $350 for a rare john woo movie and totalled $60,000 for the eventual collection of 2,400. i feel so paled in comparison. then again, i am also a broke mofo. 2,400 tho…wow. i think my collection (which includes an equal split of foreign movies) hovers somewhere around 100? hmm, now im curious…
worth mentioning also is guzzlefish, an indexing site for peoples dvd collections. todd, the aforementioned collector with 1,400 titles, griped how they mislabeled the genre for one of his dvds, blood freak as “education/general interest” when its apparently “horror” (dur). guzzlefish’s founder dave snider stated that they received their info prepackaged from content provider muze. righty-o. so in response…straight from someone who coincidentally works for muze…”incomplete use of our data. we actually have a sub genre of “mondo/shockumentaries” for blood freak. guzzlefish doesn’t use the sub-genre…” silly guzzlefish…
> buttloads of dvds (via ny times)

maybe investing in more dvds, and watching them repeatedly would aid my poor movie rentention. hmmm.
word of caution, habitual dvd buying is a bad bad habit. and netflix is my nicotine patch…
The DVD Collection mentioned in this article, is now for sale.
