addendum | wow do people like linking to this moreso than the original post from aicn. hey der. to answer a few questions…no, i cant verify any of this (im just another aicn reader). yes, the return of the king rocks much. if you hear any new news, feel free to comment…b/c damnit, i want to know also.
some rumors emerged recently on aint it cool news about what to expect from the forthcoming extended version of the return of the king. one negative rumor (and hopefully its just a rumor) and the rest covering the coo content that was obviously left out of the theatrical trailer…including the aforementioned witch-king vs. gandalf beatdown. word. its spoiler material (for those who havent read the book anyway)…so its in the extended read below. > continued…
* I’ve been secretly emailing Billie and Katie Jackson, trying to get them to start sending me some insider info. Billie, unfortunately, has felt some sort of curious loyalty to his parents and refused to spill the beans. Katie, on the other hand, claims that Dark Horizons was offering her two chocolate frogs and an orange lolly… that damn Lolly put it out of the budget range Harry allowed for the caper so it was then that negotiations broke down. Luckily, we still have top spies embedded deep within Mount Doom, and here’s what they had to offer on the upcoming Extended Edition of RETURN OF THE KING…
(BEWARE… Spoilers abound)
– Word is that New Line are balking at the price for another Extended Edition, and may be farming out the FX to El Cheapo American FX House Inc rather than the high-quality excesses of WETA… our scooper (Toss the Dwarf) pointed out that this is strictly rumour-mill stuff, but remember who told you first.
– This one isn’t going to come as a surprise, but for the record: we’ll be seeing Gandalf and his Power Rangers confronting Saruman after the Helm’s Deep battle, followed by the multi-coloured one falling to his death.
– Merry will pledge his allegiance to Theoden in a scene similar to the Pippin/Denethor bit. Toss points out that shots from this scene have appeared in an early ROTK teaser, as well as a *very* early LOTR teaser from way back in the beginning.
– Following his acceptance of Anduril from Elrond, Aragorn uses the Palantir to reveal himself to Sauron. Sauron shows him a vision of Arwen’s sickness. This stuff was used instead during the dream sequence just before Elrond arrives at Dunharrow in the theatrical cut.
– From the horse’s mouth: ‘Remember the scene in which the Witch King is asked what he’s going to do with Gandalf, and he says I will break him? This pays off big time in a battle between the Witch King and Gandalf as Gandalf and Pippin ride to save Faramir from the pyre. At the end of the battle, the Witch King breaks Gandalf’s staff and then the Rohirrim turn up and the Witch King gets distracted. The beginning of this confrontation is one of the $$$ shots in the ROTK trailer: the Witch King’s fell beast landing on the ramparts in front of Gandalf and Pippin on Shadowfax.’
– ‘We see Gamling die on the Pelennor Fields theres a quick shot of Eomer bawling in the ROTK trailer.’
– ‘In the Houses of Healing, Aragorn heals Faramir, who then meets Eowyn and they fall in love. Aww.’
– ‘A disguised Frodo and Sam join a column of marching orcs on the way to Mt Doom. Their master is a ferocious orc captain with a whip. Remember the line heard over the sweeping shot of the orcs marching down through Mordor right after the Cirith Ungol sequence? That’s him, yelling Come on you slugs!.’
– ‘The Mouth of Sauron scene changes the emphasis of the entire final battle between men and orcs at the Black Gates. In the theatrical cut, Aragorn and Co. ride up to the gates, they open, and orcs come out to fight. In the extended version, they are greeted by the Mouth of Sauron (played by the Matrix’s Train Man, Bruce Spence), who has pointy teeth and a pointy helmet that covers his eyes (he doesn’t need them, see? He’s just a mouth). He rides out to show the heroes Frodos mithril vest, recently stolen by the orcs at Cirith Ungol, and to let them know that Frodo is dead and the ring is on its way to Sauron. Aragorn believes him, and the heroes despair. Going into battle at the Black Gates, the heroes have no hope at all it’s their last stand for sure, and Aragorn’s line for Frodo refers to his sacrifice, not to buying time.’
Well, there you go. I quoted Toss word-for-word there for the most part so I wouldn’t have to think too hard about the film before I saw it! More to chew on until November of next year…
If these rumors are true, and we get a scouring of the Shire, I will not just raise both my thumbs up, but my big toes as well 🙂
i dont know about the scouring of the shire. i dont think they ever shot…or intended to shoot, the scouring of the shire. i personally thought it threw off the pace in the novel, and wouldnt really mind if they excised it from the movie. everything else tho, including sarumans death, should be in the extended edition.
They never shot the scouring of the Shire, and the scene of the Shire burning in the mirror of Galadriel in FOTR was in honor of it.

and a new line from Aragorn to Mery:”Don’t worry, Merry… Gandalf’s taking Pippin to Minas Tirith, the safest place in Middle-Earth. Never has Sauron been able to reach there because the men of Gondor have been able to hold the Anduin” (please excuse some mistakes, I’m reciting from memory)
There are pictures circulating of:
the black ships,
Aragorn slaying a troll,
the Southrons coming through the gate and attacking Minas Tirith,
coo beans…thanx. you should also check out the accompanying book lotr: weapons and warfare. it has alot of details that would have otherwise gone unnoticed…including the aforementioned fact that pippins armour was faramirs childhood armour (and merry’s was theodens)…
I have that book… just haven’t got to that part yet.
Anyway, I have some mroe exciting “cuts”… well, more like “cut”. In a behind the scenes special on Primetime or AE (I think it was the same thing) they showed that Pink Orc (who had 8 lines, almost as much as Legolas and Faramir) being killed, something missed in the movie. Aragorn and Gimli team together to kill the pink orc- fun!

i cant get enuf of lotr details. they need to release a hundred more picture books…lotr rocks too much.
There will be a scene with the fallen Gondorian king too. Frodo will see him and the head that was taken off by the orcs. It’s in the official foto-book of ROTK.
I think the scene where Eomer is crying is really when he finds Eowyn on Pellenor Fields…he thinks she’s dead, but she’s not – she goes to the Houses of Healing because she gets injured after slaying the Witch King. That’s in the book, anyway…but I LOVE those other cuts! Can’t wait for the DVD to come out! o^-^o

There’s a picture in the visual companion of Merry and Pippin…not exactly crying, but looking pretty downcast; probably at the Black Gate. Perhaps further proof of the “Mouth of Sauron” part.???

There’s a clip in the trailer and a picture on the official site of aragorn falling down in weariness ( at least that’s my guess) after the Paths of the Dead. So it looks like that scene will probably be longer.

I think that the healing of Eowyn and Faramir in the House of Healing by Aragorn is in the extended version, because I saw a seen somewhere with Eowyn lying on a couch and Aragorn kneeling over her with some of the kingsfoil plant. That was a great part of the book and I hope to see it in the movie.

Where did you guys hear that the extended version will be out on August 25th? I saw one retail website taking preorders for the extended version and they said it will be out on November 15th. Which is it?
If you go to a search engine and look for the release date, you’ll find out only one thing; NO ONE IS REALLY SURE WHEN IT IS COMING OUT! All that’s really floating around the web is rumors. (As for myself, though, I tend to believe Prime Time. Thanks again Forbes!)

Also, and this one really annoyed me, It has been confirmed that the extended will be released some time in december, the main reason being that all the cast are off doing their new movies, so they had to be rounded up for the audio commentaries. Sorry to disapoint you.

I e-mailed LOTRshop.com and asked when it’s being released and they said they don’t even know because it hasn’t been announced yet. So maybe the December thing isn’t official. Just keep praying!
Forgot to mention: in the Brian Sibley book, “The Making of the Movie Trilogy,” there is a picture of Wormtongue with a knife. He never has a knife in the movie and the only time he has one in the book is when he stabs Saruman. So maybe that’ll make it to the Ex. Ed.
Please someone tell me the release date of the extended version, I really can’t wait much longer. Being an optimist i think it will be released earlier than Nov as the first version came out earlier than the first two did.

In the book he kisses her on the forehead. I expect they’ll probably kiss in the movie.

hey, does anyone know if theres going to be more fighting scenes added to The Siege of Gondor b/c that would be sweet? Also i would like to see just 1 more minute on the Pellanor fields
I would think if they are adding the Witch King / Gandalf showdown, then yes, there would be more added to Pellinor Fields battle. That makes New Lion possibly blowing off WETA more concerning as I am not sure a chep-house special effects company can do the job WETA did with those scenes.
On release date, all signs I have seen so far point to December for release.

i saw a photo where eomer was crying and that actually is theoden he is holding, he finds eowen sitting next to theoden and as he comes closer he realizes his uncle is dead.

In case none of you knows it yet, the release date for the ROTK extended edition has been scheduled for December 14. The gift set will include a polystone box shaped as a miniature of Minas Tirith (very impressive). The most wonderful Christmas gift we could imagine! ;o)
