a bunch of us trekked thru the rain last nite to central park to catch cai guo-qiang’s light cycle fireworks display. we staked out our claim along the northeastern edge of the reservoir…more or less right next to the launchers. this would of course be a pretty bad idea later on. the fireworks started around 7:45pm and we’re pretty much getting our ears permanently damaged…woo! but all we could see were normal fireworks shooting up and exploding…we were waiting for the “finale” of a large halo of explosions over the reservoir. after 4 or 5 minutes of pretty (but standard) fireworks and buzzing noises in our ears, the launchers stopped and we’re going…eh? we hadnt seen a halo yet, and we were wondering what the dilly was yo. apparently no one around us had seen a halo either…everybody jus kinda lingered, waiting for the show to “continue.” we thought that mebbe they were delaying it til the rain died down…or that what we saw was the halo…except the rain had fucked up the guidance and they exploded in all the wrong places. then we jus gave up and went to go grab food from go.
this morning i read an article about how the explosions scared the shit out of some paranoid new yorkers who apparently dont read the arts section of the newspaper. one particular paragraph however stated:
“I think the ring over the reservoir was truly phenomenal,” he said. “And the sound was really amazing, with the cadence of thunder. It reverberated through the park because of the chasm of buildings on either side.“
ring? there was a ring? bollocks.

apparently the fireworks we saw were part of the halo…and that they only had about half the halo up when the fireworks stopped. ok…in that case, it sucked! i was under the impression that the entire halo would be shot skyward in one arc, and that the ring would linger for a bit, then fade down from the sky. instead, we get random fire bursts and ringing ears. woot.

so what’s this ring supposed to look like? My favorite firework is those smiley faces. It’s not really patriotic, but they’re just so cooool!

Ooohhhh – that’s pretty cool
i thought the whole thing kind of sucked.
standing right next to the launchers…id have to agree with u. where the fuck was the halo?
actually, i don’t think they stopped. they just sucked and the smoke obscured a lot of it. it was only 5 minutes. soo much hype. and the weather didn’t help.
