noshing around and trade shows

ive been pretty spoiled when it comes to lunch this past week. we had a meeting in manhattan on tuesday, so we had lunch at casa mono on irving afterwards. mario batalis tapas bar…mmm. i dont think ive ever had such swishy and yum fried calamari before…and i def wouldnt have minded if the skirt steak tapas was a full steak. yea, we spoiled ourselves. we also checked out the licensing show at the jacob javits center yesterday. everybody and their sisters licensing something. movies, classic characters, mustard…etc. alot of the movie studios had coo banners and promos for upcoming movies…alot of narnia, pirates of the caribbean 2, fantastic four, etc. penthouse, vivid, and others were there too, but there werent any models/pornstars. i mean…wtf, someone should lodge a complaint. after romping around the show, we taxi’d over to k-town and stuffed ourselves into a coma at cho dang gol. so good…so good.

SIDE NOTE: scariest thing seen/heard at the show. a man in a suit and tie singing the meow mix song for a good 5 minutes. that is so wrong…

big apple bbq

so squishy…melting…melting. springs pretty much gone, and summers come rumbling in. woo. headed north to williamsburg after work friday to catch graces art exhibit at the rkl gallery. it was a show featuring her work and some of her risd cohorts…pretty coo. alot of cornellians showed up too, and i ended up talking about the merits of hot truck (over louis’ lunch) with a former cayugas waiters (?) for about an hour. scoobys for the win! makes me want to take a trip up just for the sandwiches…like now.

NO BIKEY BIKE
sattys bike run was cancelled in anticipation of the impending storm rumbling in. plus fish had to go check out real estate. so in lieu of biking, i did nothing. it was super. i popped in stereo future for a relaxing background video/soundtrack and gamed all day. no biking next weekend either…since its fathers day. so biking will (hopefully) resume the following weekend.

BIG APPLE BBQ
sunday was an outting to the big apple bbq block party at madison square…wooha! a park filled with bbq goodness from around the country…yum. well i guess it sounded coo in my head. in reality, we got loooong lines up the wazoo. we were starved when we got there, so we chose the shortest (and closest) line we saw…nyc’s own dinosaur bbq. everybody got a yum plate of pork shoulders with beans and laid out on the lawn to nosh. i wanted to check out more of what the grill masters had to offer, but the lines (and laziness) kinda dissuaded me and we just marinated on the lawn instead. hmm…just scanned thru tiens excursion, and he apparently had no qualms about making his way thru multiple booths. damn youz. we walked around afterwards, grabbed some juicies from jamba juice, roamed the strand, and then split off for home. woo summer days…

cathartic and life-changing

wow was ashes and snow uplifting, life-changing, cathartic even. after seeing the ashes and snow exhibit friday, i immediately found the obscured road in my life that led to moral redemption and a greater hold on what it means to be a human. i leave for tibet and spiritual uplifting tomorrow. bwahaha…wtf. yea, ahem. so yes, went to the nomadic museum friday afternoon to catch ashes and snow. pretty exhibit. look at me, im a sensitive yet poetic human dancing with big whales! look over there! a kid hugging a cheetah because he too feels the pain of mother earth! a bit overly dramatic for my tastes, but the photos and the material they were printed on were nice. im not sure how much elephants and cheetahs can change my life perceptions, but they were nice. its like avant garde national geographics. i went food shopping afterwards.

I DIDNT WIPE
sattys agenda for bike riding fuckabilly was the site of last years ass-kicking, the mahlon dickerson. time heals all, so i wasnt as afraid of the trails as i was a few seconds after a big stump in the trail sent me flying. it had rained earlier in the day, so many of the trails were a bit damp. alot of the trails also seemed somewhat less rocky, and we took many of the trails with relative ease. there were some swampy areas, and i did bail once after losing my balance on a narrow bridge, but overall it was a good ride.

we cut out relatively early to go check out a crawfish festival. correction…music/crawfish festival. fish had a plan, and it involved not paying the ridiculous entry fee (the crawfish itself still cost money). we parked nearby, then went to check out the “trails” around the back of the area. after doing that for approximately a minute, we stashed our bikes in the woods and ducked thru a gate on the far side of the festival…yay! normally id feel bad about something like this (ok, not really), but the entry fee was ridiculously expensive and was mainly for the music anyway (which was country suck). the food however…holy fuck. we each got jambalaya and a box of crawfish…word! i is a happy boy. the crawfish was damn good, having been carted up from louisiana just for the festival. after noshing the food as fast as we could, we grabbed some drinks and ducked back into the shadows (read: go and retrieve our bikes before some local townie stumbled on them).

CHELSEA PARTYING
after getting home and showering, i headed out to chelsea for derricks party at the maritime. chelseas not exactly a neighborhood id normally do my drinky-drinks at, but derrick said that that was the idea…not getting too comfortable with your usual places. which is all fine and spiffy, but we were still surrounded by a thousand and one guys in untucked button-downs and cookie-cutter sorority girls. it was a sickeningly nice nite out tho, so chilling in the cabana room on the roof deck was pretty coo. i stayed til around 2ish, after having depleted my funds on $7 bottles. ouch. i spent the rest of the weekend marinating. ah…marination.

hartshorne 05 season

*stretch* ah…nice long weekend. me is happy. a bit injured and pained, but its all good. satty was the first official biking run of 2005. the trail of choice was the scenic seaside mountain trails of the hartshorne near sandy hook. fish said he was out of shape, and i hadnt exactly been endurance training during the winter, so we didnt really know whether we’d make it thru or keel over and spew our lunch. after the first climb up the trail head, fish was near death and i seemed fine…so i guess that answered our question. we rode on anyhoo, taking the trails pretty well. the trails were still relatively fresh tho, so the soil was pretty loose. loose soil=holy crap no traction! and as a result i spilled alot…ouch. by the end of our (relatively) short 2 hour run, i scratched up my entire right arm and leg, and i think i poked my chest hard with the end of my handle-bar after a spill, because its kind of sore. ack. anyhoo, good run…*golfclap*. fish took his baja on a brief off-road sand run for a bit while we tracked down a place to nosh near the waterside (we wanted seafood). we eventually ate at the pirates cove (yar!) yumming down fresh seafood and sending people to the plank. and afterwards, we got caught in a flash storm. gah! we spent a good 15 minutes tracking down a place to pick up something to cover our bikes, bought a car cover from an auto store, tied down our bikes, and rode cautiously down the highway…looking back every 5 minutes to make sure the cover didnt blow off and land on someones windshield, blindly sending them over a cliff to a fiery death. yea. we grabbed coffee and chess at our summit starbucks pitstop (2 wins out of 3…woo!), then back to the city for me. word.

SUNDAY
i dont really remember sunday, so i probably did nothing.

MONDAY
monday was a chillout/bday party at derricks (the first of two). pretty nice way to end the memorial weekend. his brooklyn pad was excessively big, which made me want to hurt him…i think the living room was the size of my apartment. it was pretty chill, with people mellowing out on drinks and hanging on the roof (that we werent supposed to be on). and right before i was about to leave, grace showed up too from rhode island. which was pretty coo since i hadnt seen her in years. derricks second partys next weekend, so maybe ill turn up for that. its at the maritime hotel, but i wont hold that against him.

london rockin’ day.06

ah…day 06, our last full day in london. time flies, and we still had a list of things we hadnt even hit yet. we wanted to get schooled, so we headed out to the trio of museums of the victoria and albert, the natural history, and the science museum…all next to each other. they were packed, but we still got edumacated…and even made a lunch pitstop at one last english pub, the hoop and toy(??). we wandered around later at nite, grabbed french foodage in soho, then headed back to our hotel to pack up. we caught our flight the next day, and got to sit two rows behind the alleged uk tween girl band girls aloud. what the fuck were they doing in coach?

london rockin’ day.05

day 05…our daytrip out to the countryside. we joined a bus tour to get out of london for a day and see a bit of the english countryside. the main stop was oxford, but with side trips to warwick castle and stratford-upon-avon beforehand. warwick was very touristy…in the sense that it was run by the same people as madame tussauds. kinda hokey, sometimes cheesy, but still fun. we then hit the small town of stratford-upon-avon, the birthplace of william shakespeare. again, touristy, but the town was pretty coo. we didnt stay in the town long, but still managed to trek over to the trinity church, where shakespeare is buried. after that was oxford, where we did a walking tour of the grounds. it was definitely nice to get out of the city for a day, see the rolling english countryside. definitely still have to see a real english castle one day tho. warwick didnt really do it for me. we caught din afterwards at this small okonomiyaki place called abeno-too…which served up osaka-style okonomiyakis. yum yum…

london rockin’ day.03+04

day 03…new years eve. woot! well we didnt exactly have any plans for midnight celebrations, but we headed out anyhoo to get our tourist on. new years eve was as good a day as any to check out the tower of london. the yeoman/beefeater guide gave us a nice detailed tour of the various sites and their bloody history. beheadings here, drawn and quarters there…fun shit. the armoury was pretty rockin’, as were the crown jewels (bling bling yo), but sadly no pics of the jewels. we roamed around afterwards, heading over to st. katharines dock. that particular area, holy shit nice. i personally dont know much about that neighborhood, but if i could, id live there. we continued wandering around afterwards, trying to figure out what to do at the stroke of midnight. we did figure out some party plans at the last sec, but the party turned out to be rsvp when we got there (it wasnt supposed to be), so we partied at a pub near our hotel…the prince alfred. drink, party, happy new year! 2005…word.

oh, and one pic from new years day. fish caught a soccer game, and i just wandered around london aimlessly. we met up later for yum shanghai on gerrard st.

london rockin’ day.02

day 02 was started early at the crack of dawn. which in london was apparently sometime around 10am. weird. the second day was interspersed with some site-seeing, shopping, and good foodage at wagamama’s. amongst the points of interest hit up were westminster abbey, churchills war room, the imperial war museum, oxford st, carnaby, the camden locks and camden market, covent market, and piccadilly circus…whew.

london rockin’ day.01

london rock the house! new years and then-some was spent roaming thru the streets of london, uk. roaming and roaming and roaming…argh my feet. there were actually alot of americans there over the holidays, as well as plenty of (in descending order), italians, french, and russians(?). before the pretty pictorials, some m3ntal notes about london and the uk.

01. a $2 for every £1 exchange rate really, really sucks.
02. whats up with the 2 pence?
03. the various pub names. rat and parrot, eagle and child, lamb and flag…?
04. there are alot of starbucks in london.
05. there are as many, if not more pret a mangers.
06. asian-italian girls…hawt!

onto the pics! day.01 (we landed in the morning, so essentially the same day we arrived) included: chinatown roaming, westminster/parliament, the tate modern, st. pauls, and the somerset house.

ADDENDUM
oh right, and tien…about that slide in front of the tate. maybe i skimmed the read and didnt catch the details, but that shits not ice! not only was it a pretty paltry slide (oooh….10 ft), but it was made of some kind of plastic bubble/astroturf/whatever material. no ice…blah! balls to that…
