todays words are cynicism and sarcasm. apparently many people these days are confusing the two disparate words for each other. lets start with cynicism and its derivative…cynical as defined by merriam-webster.

CYNICAL > ‘si-ni-k&l > having or showing the attitude or temper of a cynic; especially : contemptuously distrustful of human nature and motives > synonym to MISANTHROPIC, PESSIMISTIC mean deeply distrustful. CYNICAL implies having a sneering disbelief in sincerity or integrity (cynical about politicians’ motives) MISANTHROPIC suggests a rooted distrust and dislike of human beings and their society (a solitary and misanthropic artist). PESSIMISTIC implies having a gloomy, distrustful view of life.

so what we gather here is that a cynic is world-weary and pessimistic, yes? onto sarcasm then.

SARCASM > ‘sär-“ka-z&m > 1 : a sharp and often satirical or ironic utterance designed to cut or give pain. 2 a : a mode of satirical wit depending for its effect on bitter, caustic, and often ironic language that is usually directed against an individual b : the use or language of sarcasm.
one is rather pessimistic…in terms of world-views and the such. the other is just, well…a person who makes snide comments to mask their fragile egos in hopes that ridicule is averted to another twit. a person can be sarcastic without being a pessimist. for example….

person 1 > did you know bob hope died?
person 2 > gosh, really? i had not known as i have been meditating in a cave for a year eating only lima beans and jell-o pudding.
person 1 > really?
person 2 > no, not really…

there was no pessimism is person 2’s dialogue. he was merely being a dick. i am sarcastic, not cynical/pessimistic. maybe a wee cynical, but thats only if you draw out that line defining misanthropic stating “distrust and dislike of human beings.” (80%…so sad) see, i like sunshine and happy daisies and cute little woodland creatures. no really…it doesnt make me nauseous or anything. next we’ll be discussing the differences between pessimism and having m3ntal instabilities.

its cold enough outside to wear a sweater, but gets sweaty while in the subway, but then freezing on the actual subway train, but then sweaty again in the station, and then cold outside, but not if you exert yourself (running, etc) else its jus warm enuf for you to start sweating. my poor sweat glands are utterly confused at the moment…

breast scarves. wrong on so so many levels…so many. alice, you have to stop sending me these. and oh yea, marisol…clark makes out with lana and lex discovers that hes really in love with lana while on a deserted island. bwahahaha! jk…what the hell kind of season premiere would that be?

look…i actually got the side comments thing to work. go cut+paste! anyhoo…i thought it was mildly entertaining. useful too, since i sometimes miss comments left on older (read: not todays) entries. oh yea, dont post donkey porn in the comments or it might fuck up the side comments. at the least put it at the end (after 80 characters actually) so it gets truncated by the code.

after the nth time being asked, i thought id take today to explain a bit about why there are cows and bears all over this damn site. quite the exciting topic du jour, right? a while back i met this dude named jim at a friends bbq. he was with a band called bump and seemed like a coo guy, so we were talking. a few months later he emails me asking me if i wanted to do some mini flyers for his band…so i fig’d itd be fun and said yes. this is essentially where the cows and bears come in. the cow is my cornell cow…squishy, fun, cornell written on its ass…and the bear was a gift from a friend. so for the flyers, i took photos of um…the cow riding the bear. dont think about the logisitics of it…im jus telling you that the cow was riding the bear. u kno…bump! i made 4 flyers for them…1 with a car design, and 3 with the cow+bear from different angles. anyhoo…they came out coo and shit…and when it came time to redesign my elysium site, i liked the humping cow so much that i used it as part of the design. and then when it came time for my journal, i jus brought over the humping cow from elysium. so there ya go…humping cow history.

after looking thru the archives that i thought i had downloaded b4 i killed my old server, i realized that smart ftp isnt so smart, and that it had only downloaded approximately up to march. poo. so i had a few options. i rebuilt the few entries i had of september from the last “snapshot” of the index.html…then i went back to my old xanga account to get my old old archives from january to the beginning of july. and the rest was filled in by cached snapshots from google (woo google!). whew. i didnt port over 100%…more like 90%. left out alot of crap. anyhoo…im tired. any bugs…send ’em my way.

yea…apparently if one wanted to save their old archives before doing something drastic like, oh…say switching web hosts, they should export their archives so they can import them later. i read this interesting bit of info after i switched hosts, killed the old account, and uploaded everything as-is (was) onto the new server. fyi…that doesnt work. anyhoo…im currently looking for ways to make the old archives work…otherwise ill have to reproduce every entry by hand. ouch.

yesh….i jus converted my entire xanga account to my personal site now. in reality…i actually started this about a month ago. i installed movable type and actually got it to work. but then i got bored and went back to xanga. then tien made the jump to movable type…so i fig’d i should try it again then. anyhoo…first post. blah blah blah….

and jah…im working on the layout! still figuring out the damn css.
