alot of random shit

another follow-up to a prior post…yay! and this one goes aaaall the way back to march 2003, when i posted about a giant flying death laser the military was developing to shoot down missiles and bring vicious burning death to small woodland creatures. a year and a half later, the militarys finally tested out the giant laser, albeit not yet in a flying 747. the “first light” was a success, which means that theyll be progressing with the testing phase…mounting it in a plane, making it so the focusing optics dont destroy themselves, etc. pretty soon we’ll have vicious flying laser death rays to add to our arsenal of cruise missiles, rail guns, and jehovahs witnesses.

BUSH VS. SCIENCE
speaking of scientific progress, americas gonna be taking a couple steps backwards in the next four years…word. wired has an enlightening article on bush vs. the scientific community. i particularly like how the title of the article is “science braces for second term“. to be honest, its actually quite a depressing article to read. given the past four years, none of it is too surprising. but its still pretty disheartening when all the scientific progress bush has and will continue to piss on is laid out so clearly in front of you. stem-cell research, global climate changes, renewable-energy research, and science education…bush seems to have some kind of misguided desire to blast america back into the stone age.

FUCK THE SOUTH
and since the pain of the election still lingers in many…this funny rant on why the south sucks balls (via the real janelle). its a pretty damning indictment of southern culture, picking apart piece by piece their oft-cited stances and issues and how they perceive us northeastern carpet-baggers. this includes the traditional foundations of america (the 13 original colonies were you know…new england and all), federal taxes (the states who primarily pay the most are blue states), and supposed superior southern moral values (their divorce rates are actually higher). ah, a fun read. for an even more unforgiving and unrelenting assault on the south (read: bush supporters), theres also the urban archipelago, which looks at the primary social gaps that exist not between blue and red states, but actually urban and rural communities.

SMART STATES
look, another convenient segue! speaking of the states, ive always been curious about those forwards you get that break down the average iq’s of the 50 states, and then who they voted for in the 2004 elections. they seemed a bit too convenient, with all the higher iq states voting kerry and all the idiots voting bush (as unsurprising as it was). i had also read a few rebuttals around the net that stated that the lists were completely fictional…that its rather impossible to gauge the average iq of any particular state. too bad eh. but hey, the morgan quitno press did just come out with their annual list of the smartest states in america the other day. so we’ll just compile our own list…yay to that! the list btw, is actually determined by a list of factors pertaining to the states educational system and how they compare to the national average. its a nice characterization of the quality of education the state provides, which in turn makes for smarter residents. whatever, lets break it down yo…

…CONTINUED > THE FUN LIST
as the article points out, massachusetts is number one again for the second consecutive year, while new mexico is dead last for the third year in a row. go new mexico! so as follows, the list of the states, cross-referenced with who the state gave their electoral votes to in the 2004 elections. this is fun…

atlantis, not sorry, and shitty english

randomness…yay! and on a tuesday too.

ATLANTIS FOUND…FOR REAL!
first up is this interesting bit of news thats been making its way around the net. a u.s. researcher has claimed that hes found the lost city of atlantis. robert sarmast, an architect by training, claims (pretty confidently) that his use of side-scanning sonar has detected man-made walls just southeast of cyprus that fit platos description of atlantis. the areas long been speculated as a likely location if atlantis did indeed exist…due primarily to platos descriptions of the “pillars of hercules“, thought to be the straits of gibraltar, so its not surprising that sarmast wouldve focused his search in the area. whats interesting tho is really just how confident he sounds. i mean, he sounds like hes motherfucking leo dicaprio and king of the world. word bobby…more power to ya. still tho, whether this is genuine or not, or if atlantis could ever be definitively “found”, i think its interesting that theres just so much of human civilization thats relatively unknown, that it becomes the stuff of myths and legends. troy, the tower of babel, middle-earth and hobbits…recorded history as well as the things that fell between the cracks make for interesting lore.

WERENOTSORRY.COM
yay…a follow-up to a prior post. the bbc has an interesting article on the worldwide exposure sorryeverybody.com has gotten since it went live, as well as opposing sites that have been cropping up as a result. sites such as werenotsorry.com, which incidentally doesnt seem to be working, but its just as well. the bbc conveniently provided an accompanying picture of someone from werenotsorry.com…some dude holding up a sign and sporting what appears to be a civil war-era cavalry hat. its not definitively confederate (it actually looks blue), but way to look like a honky…

BUSH SUCKS AT ENGLISH
the english language is currently getting fucked up majorly, thanks to people like king george the retarded, and surprisingly tony blair too…according to john humphrys new book, “lost for words“. a leading british political journalist, humphrys book elaborates not only on bushs brutal destruction of proper english (misunderestimate? ouch), but also the prevalence of “management speak…meaningless phrases and hackneyed mantras to disguise policies or protect themselves from accountability.” he also specifically points out tony blairs fascinating habit of leaving out verbs in his speeches…”for our young people, a brighter future,” and “the age of achievement, at home and abroad“. word, those sound like corporate mission statements…or cheesy chinese mao-era catch phrases sung by choirs of 10-year olds.

and on the other end of the complexity spectrum, humphrys observes how bush is a “master of the language of political manipulation“…utilizing words over and over again til their nuanced definitions have shot far past quotidian and straight into becoming meaningless. words such as “freedom” and “democracy“…which incidentally, are two words quoted prominently in the bbc article from werenotsorry.com.

jedi worms and 3d hotties

back to the daily rhetoric of random posts…word. first up is this weird-ass japanese commercial fonz sent me. a father and son team of tea leaf-loving worms using jedi mind-tricks on japanese tea leaf-pickers. wah desu!

STUPID PATENTS
i really do wonder about the patent office sometimes. an article came out yesterday about a lawsuit the graphic specialists tektronix is bringing on a number of major games companies. they apparently claim that they hold a patent on displaying 3d graphics on a 2d display. which is, you know, essentially every single fucking video game out there right now. i dont know how they got such a retarded patent, but apparently the defendants will be citing precedents of 3d graphics on 2d displays that predate tektronix‘s retard 1987 patent. next thing you know some stupid companys going to claim that they invented the hyperlink. no wait…

MISS DIGITAL
speaking of 3d, theres an interesting wired article about a digital beauty contest…the miss digital world beauty pageantpageant…pageant…echo. showcasing polygonal hotness from around the world, the pageants creator franz cerami says that he intends to start a cg talent agency to promote and manage a stable of artificial hotties. its an interesting concept to say the least, one which i cant really say is too far out there in terms of weirdness. a number of companies around the world, not just video game companies, already utilize cg models as part of their promotions. not to mention the fact that some of the cg models the article highlights are downright scary in terms of their detail. digital freckles and pores…holy shit. as impressive as they are tho, im still personally down with the digital showgirls of namco. batter up.

stupid client quotes

entertainment all day long. clientcopia. stupidity running rampant….blargh! i have a few of my own, but nothing seems to compare to stupid client quote #624:

We were at our client’s offices having a serious meeting about the custom built multi-national ecommerce system that we were developing for them. My client was in the middle of a sentence and his attention suddenly wandered as he gazed out of the window into the attractive wooded area that surrounds their offices and said “I have this idea for a website for squirrels called ‘Where did I leave my nuts dot com’ which squirrels could log in to, to remind them where they buried their nuts”. He’d obviously been doing too much acid.

alter-egos

[ audio selection | asian dub foundation – free satpl ram (primal scream mix) ]

nutsack oregon, soft tacos, and that area between your crotch and asshole…topics of conversation at the new monday nite wings. word yo…i think ill be wide awake for the rest of the week now. there was also supposed to be coinciding monday nite football, but they apparently dont turn on the projectors outside at croxleys anymore, since theyve had complaints from neighbors of the noise it generates (from the patrons, not from the actual game). cockballs to that.

anyhoo, i came across this interesting article today from the bbc about online avatars. the alter ego photography exhibit by photo-journalist robbie cooper documents the characters that populate various mmorpg’s and the people they represent in real life. curious to see whether the avatars resembled their real-life counterparts, cooper went thru europe and america to photograph the people behind the polygons…from the wheelchair bound kid with muscular dystrophy who is an armoured warrior in star wars galaxy, to the mother of two who is represented by a half-naked avatar.

the exhibit actually reminded me in many ways of the anime .hack//sign, where the main characters were actually virtual avatars in a computer game that represented some aspects of the people who controlled them in the real world. interesting anime (if not a little repetitive and boring)…if you ever get the chance.
