next-gen gaming and um…trailers

im sure this is old news to alot of people…the unveiling of the new xbox 360, playstation 3, and the new nintendo revolution at the e3 going on right now. and when i say “old” i mean more than 24 hours old, because we’re good like that in the 21st century. theyre all powerful yadda yadda. look at me, im so bloody cool i can render a bajillion polygons a second. and so on and so forth. im personally more of a pc gamer (ever since the premature death of the dreamcast), so the revolutionary graphics blah blah blah are nothing new for many. still coo tho, but um…moving on.

three trailers today…one game-related and two movie-related. and since i began with that random gaming prologue, ill start there. theres a new quake 4 trailer out, and it looks kinda coo. its sporting the doom 3 engine, so its got swishy graphics, moody lighting, et al. i havent been that big of a fan of the carmack quakes (as opposed to the romero-led first one), stroggos and all that. doom 3 was a bit of a bore tho, so maybe the quake franchise running the same graphics engine with considerably more killing (and lights, lamps, and you know…the ability to see things) could be fun.

WERE-RABBIT
the trailer for the new wallace and gromit and the curse of the were-rabbit is out, and its looking rockin’. gromit rocks, and wallace is a tool…but thats ok. crossing fingers now for a state-side release…word.

DA VINCI…STUFF
the last trailer today isnt so much a trailer as it is a really brief and uninformative teaser. the new da vinci code teaser trailer is out, and its…yea. there arent any movie clips or anything. just an ominous voice and the mona lisa flying around. but hey, its a teaser, and the movie is a whole year away (to the day almost)…so this is just to whet your palate so to speak.

and it toasts them too

to all the haters who wondered why on earth id buy myself a lightsaber (you know who you are), im sure they were unaware of the many practical day-to-day applications of a handy lightsaber. how stuff works has however created a convenient guide to the inner workings and domestic applications of your own personal lightsaber. things like lighting ciggies, trimming hedges, and cutting AND toasting a bagel at the same time, wow!

soul calibur 3

hmm, news to me. soul calibur 3? word, thats coo. an article from today mentioned that there will be no online options, and that its only coming out for the ps2 (so they say for now). but there are 3 new characters, so thats coo. zasalamal, who looks like hes sporting astaroths stance, setsuka, and tira and her giant circular blade. ill always be partial to mitsurugi and ivy, but setsukas looking mighty fine…

100 movie quotes…and more halo

[ audio selection | black eyed peas – the boogie that be ]

its friday again, and blah blah blah something or other. its funny how fall/winter/cold weather/whatever makes effort-making so hard. cold weathers like a special pair of goggles that, when put on, makes everything outside your window look like crap…and conversely, makes your bed look like sweet, sweet heaven. ah well, i think i have plans for the weekend. id better…otherwise ill be curled up in bed straight thru to monday.

TOP 100 MOVIE QUOTES
cnn has a coo article about a cbs special coming out next june, organized by the american film institute and counting down the top 100 quotes from u.s. movies. classics like “heres looking at you, kid“, “you cant handle the truth!“, and of course, “may the force be with you.“. the list will be voted on from now til the show, and covers a wide spectrum of movies. from the golden age of cinema right up to recent movies like the lord of the rings trilogy, it should be a pretty interesting countdown.

HALO MOVIE MURMURS
just one other movie news for today. just as me and fonz were pontificating (word of the day) about the idea of a halo movie (bungies very protective of their halo franchise), the rumor mills already started rumbling. a new post on aicn yesterday brought up new speculations about a possible halo movie. bungie has apparently always wanted the creative team of the original alien (and nobody else) to work on a potential halo movie. so specifically…only ridley scott and the co-writer ron shussett (whos talked about in the article). shussetts camp has already hinted at their interest. so if scott were somehow convinced to jump onboard, the project just might get a set of wheels. granted its all speculation and wishful thinking at the moment, but a halo movie would def be worth seeing.

tekken and warcraft

[ audio selection | quarashi – tarfur ]

ok, now for the fun shit. thanks to derrick and greg for the heads-ups.

DEVIL JIN AND JINPACHI
first up is some rockin’ new tekken 5 game footage from tekken zaibatsu. the spanky new hand-shot vid features some korean arcade-goers going ape-shit over the two last bosses in tekken 5, devil jin and jinpachi…heihachis dad, kazuyas granddad, and jins great-granddad. heihachis already 80-something, so this dudes gotta be like over a hundred. fucker should be brawling with a wheelchair and oxygen tank. the videos pretty badass…with devil jin looking like a bad motherfucker, and jinpachi fucking shit up with massive fireballs from the giant mouth in his belly. thats kinda nasty.

WORLD OF WARCRAFT
and the second movie is the newly released intro cinematic from the forthcoming blizzard mmorpg world of warcraft. game cinematics have come a long way in the last few years, with every other new game sporting some badass cinematics. but just as i was beginning to think gaming cinematics had finally caught up to the standards blizzard laid down (especially those from diablo 2 and lord of destruction), they come back and blow them all away. in terms of art direction, cinematography, and just plain quality, blizzard is still without a doubt the best cinematic renderers in the gaming industry.
