swishy lushing

current selection | the david arnold james bond project – nobody does it better
feelin’ | groggy

nothing like monday nite lushing to make tuesdays feel like a bumpy car ride thru a smelly garbage dump. me, alice, and marisol checked out the abitare italia tour yesterday in soho. how can you go wrong with fine italian design, free drinks, and hors’ d’ouerves? so along this design tour, you get this sweepstakes card thing…and if you get it stamped from 4 places along the route, you’re entered to win a trip to italy. (woo!) we started at flou to admire the furniture itd take 4 paychecks to pay for, and then headed to boffi where we actually ran into ppl we knew. each successive place we went to entailed more drinking and less furniture-admiring (tho we did eventually get the 4 stamps…italia here we come). at vivendum…the main vip event, they also had an open bar. after that i knew tuesday wouldnt be very productive.

anyhoo…im eating pocky right now and trying to look productive. i think id better go find some gatorade…

sympathy

current selection | fantastic plastic machine – lotto (andreas dorau mix)

my first outing to the nyc asian film festival! wooha! its the third day of the film festival and me and fish caught the saturday showings of ping pong and sympathy for mr. vengeance. there was a packed audience for both showings, which was coo for the festival…bad for us, since we got there late for ping pong and ended up in the front row. neck…ouch. the host gave a coo crazy eddie welcome speech before each movie and also gave away posters and prizes. movie was of course much more coo on the big screen. (hero…kenzan!) after ping pong, we grabbed some pommes frites (with sweet mango chutney mayo…yum) and headed back for the 9pm showing of sympathy. so here we go….

cin3matic contraband – sympathy for mr. vengeance
let me begin by saying that theres only ever been 2 movies ive watched that, while i thought were masterpieces of cinema, would never ever watch again b/c of their sheer sadness. the first is graveyard of the fireflies, and the second is jin-roh: wolf brigade. after today, im adding another masterpiece to the blacklist…sympathy for mr. vengeance.
i kind of knew what to expect, but i was still blown away by sympathy…primarily by the fact that i completely underestimated the sheer bleakness of it. sympathy is a movie about hope, and the utter lack of. it asks you what makes people with good intentions do bad things. ryu is a deaf/mute factory worker who is desperately trying to find his sister a kidney donor. after the initial search turns up with the wrong blood type, ryu continues to search all avenues, including illegal ones. when even that doesnt work out, and the hospital does in fact find a donor, he is now short of money and must find the cash necessary to pay for his sisters transplant. this is all the more hard since he had just been fired from his job. when ryu’s girlfriend suggests that they kidnap his former boss’s daughter for ransom, ryu begins his slow walk down the path of self-destruction.

sympathy is unlike anything ive seen. it is not for the weak-hearted…there are no daisies or sunshine in this bleak and somber world. sympathy is about how good intentions can quickly become bad decisions. evil begets evil, and sympathy unflinchingly shows all the ugliness with little held back. most of the movie is silent, letting the actions of the characters speak loudly. as a deaf/mute, ryu expresses a blankness throughout, suggesting almost a numbness to the ugliness that pervades his world. its in his face that you can see how tired he is of all thats wrong in his life. you can see the exact moment when he knows that hes so far past hope that all thats left is self-destruction. there are no happy endings in sympathy. each successive step towards hell leaves indelible images in your mind. as the title suggests, the movie is not about optimism or gratifying conclusions. its asking you to sympathize for those that are no longer able to hope for the best…they can only see the worst.

matrix reloaded finally!

current selection | rob d – furious angels

wow. woo. wow. i dont care what 22% of the critics on rotten tomatoes say. reloaded kicks the butts of many people…and then promptly strolls to their front and kicks the nuts of many people. the first question alot of people ask is answered with, “no, its not better than the first matrix.” the first matrix was revelatory. it was about discovery, both within the plot and for the audience. and because of that, anything that follows it will have lost the advantage of surprise. the wachowskis arent stupid. they know this…so they decided instead to elaborate on the world of matrix and bring detail to the abstract ideas of the first matrix. objectively, i can see where some of the criticism comes about. the episodic nature of the movie…the first 40 minutes or so of talk talk talk. but it doesnt matter. reloaded is a movie…a continuation of the first matrix, not a reinterpretation of it. i actually thoroughly enjoyed the first 40 minutes, the majority of which was used to take a detailed look at zion and its inhabitants (not to mention the super-coo blindingly white central operations center). another gripe was the heady philosophizing throughout…especially the last 15 minutes or so. alot of it was overt expounding, most of which just sounded like abstract drivel to the majority of people. but its from this unloading of alot of material that people can start gathering their ideas and hypothesizing what it all means. i have my own ideas, but i wouldnt be disappointed if revolutions shot down every single one of my guesses. its part of the fun. besides, the other gripe about too much action? are you on crack? the action/fight scenes are fucking coo. screw all those with ridiculous expectations and bitchings about, “i can tell its cg.” well shit, congratulations. dur. so what? it still rocked.

i do however have a few gripes….everybodys allowed gripes. firstly, i didnt want to see neos ass. also, monica bellucci was wearing clothes. the twins were definitely under-utilized. (at least they werent darth mauled) and i really wish they found a better spot to cut the movie at. bastards. anyhoo…wooha! me and fish are gonna try and watch it again next week.

matrix reloaded

current selection | cj bolland – sugar is sweeter

ah…ive waited so long for this week…matrix, woo! things kick off wednesday with a reshowing of old school matrix at a friends pad, and then a 9:45 showing on thurs at the 34th st loews. wooha! this is seminal work here…i remember seeing the trailer for the first time and going, “holy shit, didja see how they pan-n-scanned and extrapolated the intermediate frames?!” jk, it was jus the holy shit part. i still have a research paper i did from third year for a technology and theory class, outlining the progenesis of the film semiotics with the architecture of control…still one of my best.

id always hoped matrix would be big. it was revolutionary on so many levels, not jus as a really spank movie. one could argue it single-handedly made dvds viable purchases, pushed film f/x in a way that hadnt been seen since the early 90’s by ilm, and opened up comics, hk kung-fu, and to a lesser extent anime to the mainstream. not to mention it brought to life the artwork of geof darrow, one of my artistic inspirations. 3 days til matrix…wooha!

x2

current selection | salt tank – angels landing

look outside…its super duper shit. rock. jus got back from a nice and relaxing weekend in joy-sey. got home around noon-ish to meet up with my sis and her bf (who came up too) and the whole fam went out to my mom’s fav chinese restaraunt, hunan cottage. we ordered a ton of food (including my fav, yiu tiau with hot soy milk…excuse my bad romanization). after lunch me, my sis, and her bf went mall-ratting. we then came back and lounged on our patio for a while talking about how my sis wants to inherit the house, rebuild the backyard double-patio, and install a hot tub. yea….ok. fish dropped by around 4 and we actually headed back to the mall. we grabbed some food (i got popeyes…yum!) and then headed over to the arcade to rock some soul calibur. then we headed over to the theaters and caught an evening showing of x2. afterwards we hit up our usual starbucks and had some coffee and chess while fish played with his new gundam. i lost the first game, but actually won the second game. holy shit! i had a good start…pushing my knights to the flanks and creating a pawn pyramid straight up the middle. after fish castled to his queens side, i noticed his 2 rooks sitting precariously close to each other. i pushed my kings knight up the flanks and forked them! after one of the rooks went down, i pretty much kept my advantage til i checked him with an aggressive queen and supporting rook. woo. after that, we jus lounged til starbucks closed and called it a nite.

as an aside. after watching x2, i felt a little indifferent. u watch it, u kno its a great film…but u dont feel anything. am i the only person who felt this way? i think it had a great plot, great characters…but i didnt feel any oomph. the “holy shit” factor wasnt there. dont get me wrong…im a big x-men fan. ive been reading since the days of whilce portacio and jim lee. but i jus didnt feel anything for the movie. i had that feeling from the very beginning. lotr and matrix i will (and did) reserve tix a month in advance. but for x2 i fig’d id jus catch it whenever. weird. its a nice appetizer for matrix tho.
