{"id":677,"date":"2004-06-25T13:09:03","date_gmt":"2004-06-25T13:09:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.m3ntalcontraband.com\/?p=677"},"modified":"2020-11-08T15:33:20","modified_gmt":"2020-11-08T20:33:20","slug":"retro-reflectum","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/m3ntal.halleytsai.com\/?p=677","title":{"rendered":"retro-reflectum"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"text-paragraph\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.popsci.com\/popsci\/science\/article\/0,12543,657003,00.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pop sci<\/a> had a brief article today about how DARPA is currently researching \u201c<i>adaptive camouflage<\/i>\u201d (ala the predator of um\u2026<i>predator<\/i>, or motoko of <i>ghost in the shell<\/i>) for use by the soldiers of the future. \u201c<i>adaptive camouflage<\/i>\u201c, as its name implies and readily apparent in the comparison to <i>predator<\/i> (dur), is an advanced form of cloaking that allows the wearer to blend into their surroundings using an imaging camouflage that mimics its surroundings. its not so much invisibility as it is a more advanced form of concealment. the technology is also not so far off, and as nasa engineer philip moynihan points out, \u201c<i>It\u2019s just a matter of when\u2026<\/i>\u201c<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"text-paragraph\">the aforementioned \u201c<i>adaptive camouflage<\/i>\u201d is in many ways similar (same actually) as the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.m3ntalcontraband.com\/journal\/archives\/000697.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">invisibility cloak<\/a> created by the japanese inventor susumu tachi, who is coincidentally still developing invisibility\/transparent technologies. his <a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/2\/hi\/technology\/3791795.stm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">newest pursuit<\/a> is applying his technology to window-less rooms\u2026one potential application of which is applying it to airplane cockpits so pilots have unobstructed views. the key component to tachi\u2019s technology is the use of \u201c<i>retro-reflectum<\/i>\u201c, a new material that can transmit 3-dimensional images, allowing the \u201ccamouflage\u201d to look more convincing than simply projecting images onto traditional surfaces. yay for stealth. this should revolutionize the ninja industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"text-paragraph\">&gt;
